Every organization knows it’s the people who make it great and Storrington Lions Club is no exception.

Working diligently behind the scenes are dozens of people volunteering at fundraising bingos, community outreach and a multitude of jobs to keep the community hall in Sunbury operational.

Over the last few years, the club has spent thousands of dollars to upgrade the hall which holds events such as weddings, funerals, polling stations and community meals. These improvements include a new bar, lights, ceiling tiles, commercial stoves, entrance ramp and wheelchair accessible doors.

One of these hardworking volunteers is Jack Babcock who has dedicated more than five decades of service to our community. Last month, Jack was presented with the Melvin Jones Award by senior Lions executive, Frank Hewitt. Jack also received expressions of gratitude from Storrington Lions Club President D’Arcy Marconi and Township Mayor Ron Vandewal.

Also in April, our club shipped 386 pairs of eyeglasses and eight hearing aids to the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre in Calgary, AB. We couldn't have done it without the community's help and would like to encourage readers to send us their used eyeglasses, hearing aids and solar eclipse glasses. If you leave them at our front door, volunteers will see that they're sent to people who need them.

Our club had two other successful events last month: Our pop can drive on April 21 was a huge success. The community accepted and met our challenge to fill a bin with cans. We even had 17 bags we couldn’t fit in the truck plus 1,750 beer cans! This event raised more than $700 for guide dogs for the blind. What a great day. And, our Youth Dance on April 19 for Grades 5 to 8 raised $775 for Storrington Public School. Our next dance on May 24 is in support of Glenburnie Public School.

We are excited to announce the return of the Thursday night Community BBQs by Kingston Charity Bike Night. Starting May 16, readers are encouraged to join the club for food and fellowship at the hall from 5 to 7 pm. Dinner is only $10 pp and includes a full meal, music, free parking, and cash bar.

Lastly, the club is proud to support the local Food Bank through Storrington Pastoral Charge. Our next collection is from 1 to 5 pm at Storrington Lions Club Hall. All donations are appreciated!
