The summer’s competitive season at Sydenham Lake Canoe Club finished up successfully at the 2019 Ontario Cup Provincial Championship Regatta in Ottawa. SLCC’s Kayak paddler, Clare Swinton won a Gold medal in the U13 K1 1000m and a Silver Medal in the U14 K1 1000m. Canoe paddlers, Claira Nelder, Clare Swinton, Ashley & Kayla Headrick won a Bronze medal in the U14 C4 1000m. Kayak paddler’s Kiera and Charlotte Wilson came 6th of 8 in their K2 500m final. Kayak paddler’s, Honour McQuay, Peyton Friendship, Kiera and Charlotte Wilson came 7th of 10 in their 500m K4 race.
Sydenham’s U14 Eastern Ontario Divisional Championship Regatta at The Memorial Point turned out to be a great two day event thanks to the many local volunteers who contributed their time, motor boats, and donations to help support the regatta. The Township of South Frontenac contributed to the event by building a new shallow entry canoe kayak dock that can also be used at future kayaking and canoeing, and possibly rowing events held at The Point. It was estimated that there were well over 500 visitors, consisting of athletes and their extended families, and officials and coaches from all over Ontario at The Point. The club received a number of compliments on the beautiful venue, clean water, and the friendliness of the local people. SLCC’s U14 athletes were also very proud to represent their club locally at The Point venue where they have swum since they were toddlers. SLCC’s participation in the E.O.Ds resulted in numerous medals and the much sought after opportunity to represent their club at the O- Cup Provincial Championship Regatta in Ottawa.
The youth population in South Frontenac seems to be on the rise as the number of young people who attended the programs, such as the Spring Training Program and the Canoe Kids Day Camp seems to be growing this year. SLCC hopes to capture those last dying days of summer by offering a Fall Program to experienced paddlers who would like the opportunity to improve their skill level to prepare for the competitive season of 2020.
