Battersea

by Chris Pantrey

What do you call a bee that complains all the time? A grumblebee!

This week's joke (and many more to come!) is courtesy of John Turgoose of Battersea. John brought me the most amazing book, The Ultimate Dad Joke Book, with over 500 jokes and puns! Literally YEARS worth of column material! So, thank you, John, for 2 things. First, making my job a little easier every week, and more important, proving that people actually do read my joke every week!

Supper is ready! Saturday, July 19 from 5-7, be at Battersea United Church for their annual fish fry. For only $20 for adults and $10 for children, enjoy a full meal of fish, salads, beans and dessert. Mmmm! Available for eat in or take out.

Beats by the Beach comes to Battersea this Saturday, July 19! From 1-3, come out and enjoy the music of Interrobang! Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blanket and toe-tapping flip-flops to enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the water.

Calling all vendors and artisans! Parham Fair is waiting for you! Our neighbours to the north are hosting their 133rd annual tradition on Saturday, August 16. Space is now available to participate in the vendor market. Please contact Nancy at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to reserve your spot!

Save the date! Saturday, August 2 from 11-4, plan to come out to the 3rd Annual Art in the Hamlet show at McLaren Art Studio, 2220 Wellington St, Battersea. There will be an amazing variety of art available, along with live music for the afternoon.

A reminder that Thursdays and Sundays every week, the Storrington Lion's Hall is the place to be! On Thursdays, come out for the community BBQ from 5-7. You know it's just too hot to cook! On Sundays, come out for the Farmer's Market from 1-5. Shop local, support local!

In June, the residents of Pine Meadow Nursing Home enjoyed a beautiful made- to- order breakfast at their Breakfast Club Program! There were happy faces all around! Part of the breakfast consisted of bagels the residents baked themselves the day before. It was a great treat! Check out the photos on FB!

Exciting news from Sail Mazinaw: “Put the date on your calendar. You won't want to miss it. Schedule weddings, surgeries, and funerals around this day of Saturday, July 26th.”

The MPOA have reset yellow markers in some areas of the waters of Mazinaw Lake. This is to mark where the Eurasian Watermilfoil invasive species are located. Please do not go past the deep side of the markers to avoid causing further spread. It breaks very easily. This causes fragments to dislodge, float on the water, sink and create new colonies.  We, as a community who love this lake, are asked to stay away from these weeds to stop the spread of this invasive weed. Reach out and inform others. Even a fishing line cast into this area can cause damage.

Upcoming Lions Events: Friday, July 18th - Fish Fry 4:30-6:30 $20; Wednesday, July 23rd

Henderson
Jean Brown

My word, our community and church folks rallied around this past weekend to offer both a yummy funeral lunch for the family of the late Howard Clark and an after church snacking lunch for our wing ding worship with musical guests Ray Whitelock, Dave Johnston, Mary Jeckel. It was like the good old days indeed and we are truly appreciative of all who contributed and assisted in any way. You all done good for sure. Henderson United meets weekly at 8:45am and we have an air conditioner to boot.

Our Pine Meadow people, in June, hosted a beautiful made to order breakfast as part of their breakfast club program, which made for a lot of happy faces. The bagels had been made by the residents themselves the day before providing a great treat!!

All roads to lead to Harlowe - the home of good food and super duper music. On Sat. July 19 the fiddlers open mic rocks on at the Harlowe Hall and then on Thurs. July 24 the hall will host a roast pork supper from 4 – 7pm with all the trimmings and dessert, at a cost of $19.00 for adults, ages 12 and under cost $9.00, and pre-schoolers free. Come and enjoy the Harlowe vibe and vibrations of music where no one puts on airs and no one goes away hungry. We love you all to pieces.

Deepest sympathy to the family of the late Muriel (Cox) Wagar whom we remember with fondness indeed. Many folks in our area taught with or were taught by Muriel’s husband the late Eric Wagar. Now they are united in death and we thank God for their lives.
