The results of the rescheduled Legion meeting demonstrated that the history of our small community mattered to many. The room was crowded and the discussion was emotional but after the vote the motion to remove the “Gordon Gaylord” name from the branch was defeated. The Legion reminded all that their annual AGM would be held the last Saturday of April.

The Kennebec Rec Committee has added a new item to their regularly scheduled programs. Yoga, by Rosemary, will be starting April 15, 9:30am to 10:30am at the Kennebec Community Centre. As many know, the benefits of Yoga are enormous. Your only requirement is to have an open mind, bring your own mat and water, and enjoy yourself.

If you suffer from the side affects of osteoporosis you may want to enrol in the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team’s program “Deep in the Bones” This is an eight week Zoom course held Wednesdays and Fridays beginning April 17, 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Please make sure you are attending the Sat. April 20, from 11- 4 HENDERSON UNITED CHURCH vendor sale at the Piccadilly Hall, 1025 Oak Flats Rd; Godfrey. The Church will team up with 14 small businesses and District 4 Recreation to create a 5 senses experience. Late lunch foods by District 4 Recreation will be for sale and each vendor will feature one or more of something to taste, smell, hear, touch, or see. Vendor fees benefit District 4 Recreation. All are welcome.

There are many vendor/yard sales planned for this summer. Just a reminder about the District 2 Rec Committee’s fundraising Spaghetti Dinner, Sunday April 21, 5pm to 7pm at the Olden (Mountain Grove) Community Hall. Are you interested in playing 3 pitch adult softball? 2 teams are now being formed in each district. Lions Club of Land O’Lakes News: The combined LOLGC and Lions “cleanup” is on April 20th. The Lions will be providing a BBQ to all the volunteers who come out to help. The Spring Extravaganza Craft Sale is on April 20th 10-2 at the Lions Hall. The Speakers Forum starts back up April 24th starting at 7pm. This is a joint venture of the Cloyne and District Historic Society and the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes, sponsored by Raymond James. Our first Speaker will be Terry Fallis the author. Refreshments will follow. Everyone is welcome. There will be a speaker every month for 6 months on the 4th Wednesday of each month…mark your calendars.

On Sunday, April 14th you can come and enjoy the music and food at the Lions Hall as another lively Music and Friends will happen. Doors open at 1:30 and the music and dance floor will be in full force from 2-5. Entrance fee is $5. On April 22, to honour Earth Day, the Lions Club will be presently wheelchair accessible Planter Boxes to the residents of Pine Meadows Nursing Home. Our first speaker, Terry Fallis, an author who has won two Stephen Leacock awards for humour, will be chatting about his latest book. The event starts at 7pm on Wednesday April 24th at the Lions Hall in Northbrook. The entrance is free of charge and refreshments will be served. On Saturday April 27th the Lions will be having a huge outdoor Yard Sale…details to follow.

Now that was a spring snow storm!  Lots of wet sticky snow and then the unfortunate consequence of power outages.    Fortunately it was followed with a few days of warmer weather and it melted quickly.    Spring activities are not far away.

The New Apostolic Church is having their annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 8  until 11:30am.   Admission is by a donation to the Denbigh Community Food Bank.

The Denbigh Recreation Committee is having its first ATV Poker Run on Saturday April 27, 2024.  The Trail begins in Heritage Park at 48 Lane St. in Denbigh.  Registration is from 10:30am to 1pm.  Cost per hand is $10.00   Prizes for the top 3 hands.  Chili and a bun will be available in the Park Canteen by donation during the event registration.  You can also get a poker hand and stop in for lunch if you are not going on the ride.

As the weather continues to change, be sure to check the Burn Ban levels -CFFR wants to remind everyone that as of April 1st, open-air burning in the township is restricted to no sooner than 2 hours before sunset, and the fire must be extinguished no later than 2 hours after sunrise.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the community breakfast at Piccadilly Hall last weekend hosted by District 4 Councillor Nicki Gowdy, and the Fire Prevention and Recruitment team for CFFR.

Transitions Storrington has a Perennial Swap planned for Saturday, April 20th from Noon to 2 PM, rain or shine. Location is the Gerald Ball Park, Sunbury. Bring your herbs, perennials, veggies... any plant to trade or give away. No selling, just swapping!

Also on April 20th is the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser at Trinity United Church at 6689 Road 38 in Verona. Cost is 12.00/person or $6.00 for children under 10. Time is from 4:30-6:30 PM and tickets can be purchased at Asselstine Hardware, Verona Hardware, and in Sydenham at the Sydenham One Stop, as well as at the door the night of the event.

Tick season has begun! Make sure your garden plans include a barrier zone to reduce the potential for tick bites.

The Celebration of Life Garden Party for Shae Alton will be held on May 25th at 2pm at 1165 Dalton Lane, Cole Lake, Ontario. Purple was her favourite colour and wearing hats. Donations instead of flowers to your local Humane Society.

Great news that SF Fire & Rescue are now using drone technology to assess the risks in surrounding areas using thermal imaging.

Special thanks to our Hydro and municipal plow and maintenance folks for keeping us safe in the recent snow storm. We were waving at them all while helping to clear up a storm damaged tree at the Henderson church with appreciation to Derek and Chase for helping us out. The tree was originally planted by the late Clifford Peterson of Bordenwood whom we remember with fondness.

Kennebec Recreation hosts their 4th Adult (18 plus) Games Night tomorrow on Fri. April 12 with doors open at 7 and games starting at 7:30. This is a low key evening with multiple tables, assortment of games, refreshments, fun and an opportunity to bring your own favourite game.

This Sun. Afternoon April 14 (second Sunday of month) Friends and Music host an Open Mic and music jam at the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes Hall in Northbrook from 2 – 5. Food is available to purchase and the canteen is open. I hear it’s a hoot with folks rocking on the dance floor, visiting, laughing and telling jokes while munching away on the snacks.

This early spring weather is causing an increased number of ticks and lyme disease, so please be careful everyone.

We’ve got some mystical musicians lined up for our Fall Vendor Bash (Oct. 5) and 40 vendors set to go- so please set the date aside. It’s always a fun time and many families are arranging family reunions on that weekend so we can all have a homecoming, visit and leave the cooking/activities to the church and hall.

Bob’s Breakfast Buffet! Thank you to all who supported another great breakfast event. Our deepest gratitude to the many volunteers both Friday and Saturday – definitely could not do it without you. You are the best! Thank you to the Larry Gibson Estate, Costco and Sheila Arthur who joined the Sponsor List for the Breakfast. Over 170 enjoyed breakfast and the profit for the church was $1063.39. Our donation jug raised $145.00 in support for 5 year old Maci who is recovering from surgery to remove a tumor at the base of her brain. Next Breakfast is May 4th – same time – same place!

Pitch-In Week is April 15-25th. Pitch-In is a community-wide clean up where residents and community groups get together to help clean up roadsides and green spaces to keep South Frontenac beautiful. You can pick up garbage by yourself, with your family or neighbours, or organize a group. Free biodegradable yellow bags are available at local retailers who sell garbage bag tags or from 2490 Keeley Road or 4432 George Street offices between 8 and 4:30 pm starting Monday April 15. Put the bags collected out with your regular garbage collection the week of April 22. Only the yellow bags or clear bags will be collected without a garbage tag.

Inverary Spring Market! Happening in Ken Garrett Park on April 27th from 10 am. to 3 pm. Enjoy the park, spring weather and lots of vendors. Something for everyone!

Private Lane Upgrade Assistance Program provides grants for residents living on private lanes to upgrade their lane to improve access for emergency vehicles. Applications are being accepted for 2024. The Township may fund up to 50% of approved projects to a maximum of $7,000. Funds must be used towards capital lane upgrades. Application deadline is Friday, May 17th.

Annual Tree Sale!: The Dog and Cranberry Lakes Association (DCLA) has trees and shrubs for sale, at $4 each. Each bare root sapling is about 12 inches tall. It sure didn't look like spring last week.  A big thank you to the Ontario Hydro crew and the Township road crew who worked long days in that wet snow to get electricity back up and the roads passable.

A Rural Community Connection event will be held to discuss ways to build connections to reduce health and social impacts of isolation and to foster resilience from the early years through to the later years.  This event takes place on April 17 from 10am to 1pm at the Verona Lion Club.  Snacks and a light lunch will be served.  To reserve your spot, please call 613-546-9696.

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church would like to thank the people that came out to play Euchre last Tues, April 2nd! It is so much fun to get together and play cards and visit and chat with friends and neighbours! Congratulations to Sandra W. for winning the high score prize with 88, newcomer Steve N. for winning the most lone hands prize with 5 and Tanya L. got the consolation prize and went home with her very own rubber chicken. If you feel like coming out to meet some new people and have some fun playing cards, the Euchre group meets on Tuesday nights at 6:50pm (games start at 7) at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road).

If you are in the mood for Bingo, you are in luck this month! The Plevna Clar-Mill Community Volunteers invite you to their Bi-Weekly Poker Chip Bingo Lunch on Tues, April 16th and 30th at the Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road) from 11am-1pm. We’ve got some future NBA stars at Perth Road Public School. They held a tournament last weekend and the Junior Girls team as well as Junior Boys team were undefeated. Way to go, kids.

For those who drop in to play darts, sorry, there will be no darts this weekend as there are events in the upstairs hall both nights.

Dust off those cowboy boots and shake off those cobwebs and join in the fun with Heartland Country, performing on stage Friday at the legion. Tickets are available at the Sydenham One Stop and Legion for only $10. Doors open at 7 and dance is 730-11:30. Get your tickets now and follow along on social media to see if there are any remaining to be bought at door.

Spring is in the air... Mother Nature seems to have sorted out her menopause and ended her relationship with Jack Frost at the same time.

There will be a SALT presentation on Boat Safety on Friday, April 19 from 11am to 1pm at the Golden Links Hall, Harrowsmith. This is a free information session and will be presented by an OPP marine officer outlining the requirements and safety aspects of the upcoming boating season. The presentation will be followed by a hot lunch that can be eaten at the hall or taken home. There is no cost to attend this event, however registration is required. Bellrock Community Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, April 20 from 9 to 11am. Location is Bellrock Community Hall. 6034 Leveque Rd. This breakfast is free of charge, while supplies last. Donations appreciated. 100% of the proceeds generated will support the Bellrock Hall.
