Welcome to 2024. Looks like our mini Covid outbreaks left town and most folks were able to celebrate the holidays without sickness.

The Sharbot Lake and District Lions told me they have had a big enough holiday so they are starting their “All You Can Eat” Breakfast January 13. Everything is the same, Oso Hall 8am to 11am, $10.00 per person and please bring your own plates & utensils.

Most of the district’s outdoor rinks are open for pleasure skating. Please check their Facebook pages for updates.

Most activities that were regularly in place last year will continue in January.

The plans for Family/Heritage weekend are well underway. Look for tons of promotions for the various events.

Thinking of you, Elda Petersen.

Cloyne - Northbrooke
by Nancy Skipper

News from Land O’ Lakes Community Services: “This is what your donations to the Christmas Hamper Program look like! (See picture) Every year the food alone takes up our entire boardroom!

We would like to thank you all for your generous donations! Also a huge shout out to Northbrook Foodland! Without their help and generosity this all would be next to impossible!

We are thrilled to have the support of such a great community. Through your donations we have been able to help over 130 families and individuals this Christmas! You truly make the difference, and we are extremely grateful!”

News from Pine Meadow: “Pine Meadow had a fantastic and fun-filled holiday season! From baking, to Christmas bingo, lots of sing-a-longs, lots of turkey, visits from family, friends and the man in red himself, the spirit of the season filled the home! We were moved by the generosity of our community, families and of our own staff. Residents and staff were treated to donuts before being entertained by carolers, another family cooked an entire meal for staff, along with the countless donations of holiday goodies we received! Staff helped to decorate our front entrance, another purchased a beautiful Christmas tree, some brought their little helpers to work while another sponsored some holiday programs with the purchase of dessert trays, yummy eggnog and such treats. Residents received the gift of handmade bags to use on their walkers/wheelchairs to store items from a joint effort of staff and family, as well as the countless homemade cards that were delivered to each resident from a number of organizations. To say we felt the love would be an understatement!”

News from the Lions Club of Land O’ Lakes: “Music and Friends Open Mic will be starting up again on Sunday, January 14th from 2-5 at the Lions Hall in Northbrook. Please come and join the music, fun, dancing and food on the 2nd Sunday of every month.”

The Cloyne and District Historical Society is presenting a screening of a National Film Board of Canada historical production about logging in the local area. Everyone is welcome. Information: Carolyn at 613=336-6858.

People from Open Mic joined Ray Bradshaw and his band, Country Sky, at the Selby Hall in the months of September through December, and everyone had a ball. The hall had been idle for a few years and we brought it back to life for the past four months. Lots of Open Mic entertainers and dancers showed up, and a lot of laughs were had. We started with fair crowds and then larger ones in December. In October there was a witch with her broom getup at the hall and a few stops (Ok, it was me) good thing I did not get a speeding ticket riding my broom home. Then at Christmastime, there was Santa (me again) with his elf (Gladys Spicer). With a great crowd, we closed the hall for Christmas with lots of fun.

After the excitement of those four months, with a house full of quality bands, we are going back to Selby, starting in February on Valentine’s Day, the 14th (Sweethearts Day), from 1pm - 5pm, followed by a potluck. The best news is that we are back on the second Wednesday of the month until June.

Henderson
Jean Brown

Christmas worship services were led in the area by Rev. Kaitlyn Ostrander at Henderson United Church, Service leader Siobhan Flinn at Land O’Lakes Emmanuel United Church, Jack Plazir at Harlowe Wesleyan.

Deepest sympathy to the family of the late Gerald Ferguson who taught in our village years ago, marrying the late Gwen Newton of Henderson who pre-deceased him. He is survived by his son Brian (Sharry) of Kingston and Grandchildren Emily and Marshall and family members John Newton (Lorraine) and their daughter Heather of Bowmanville. He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law Lyle Newton of Henderson.

Our own reporter and friend Pearl Killingbeck is now settled in at Moira Place in Tweed which is of course the town where Elvis took up residence “a while back”. We love you to pieces, Pearl!

Rev. Patsy Henry who once served in our area had an emergency appendectomy on Christmas Eve afternoon spending Christmas Day in hospital. Patsy is home now and feeling improved.

Pine Meadow rocked the holiday season- from baking, to Christmas bingo, ugly sweater party, lots of sing-a-longs, turkey, visits from family, friends, Santa and the Grinch. Thanks to the community, families, staff for many events including donuts before being entertained by carollers, special meals, dessert trays, eggnog, baking, decorating of front entrance, Christmas tree, and the gift of handmade bags to use on walkers/wheelchairs, along with homemade cards that were delivered to each resident from area organizations.

Special thanks to Ken Hook and others from the Cloyne & District Historical Society for recently photographing and posting the 260 graves from St. John the Evangelist Church in Flinton to the Flickr Cemetery site. The site is easily searchable by family name with instructions on the first photo.

Special thanks to Marylin Bolender and many helpers for organizing a Christmas dinner on Christmas Day for the 15th year in a row at the Land O’Lakes Hall in Northbrook. Marylin (who is a Past President of the club), received a small certificate of appreciation and a gift for all the care and dedication given.

This coming Sunday, Jan. 14, Friends and Music will rock the Lions Club of Land O’Lakes Hall in Northbrook with an open mic and music jam from 2 – 5. Food is available to purchase and the canteen is open. This is a monthly Sunday afternoon happening on the second Sunday of the month.

Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

Hello 2024! I hope this year goes better than last year as out of 12 months, I’ve spent 6 months in hospital. I have not been doing well and seem to have lost track of some days and visitors as my arm is too sore to write things down. I can’t sit for very long and have not been able to do my walking either.

Erma Millar and her daughter Anna from England stopped in on Christmas Eve. I hope they enjoy their Christmas in Canada. On Christmas Day, my daughter Pam, Holly, Rowan, Maddie Pearl and Lillian came in to visit. Thank you for the peameal bacon and sausages and toast though I wasn’t very hungry. It was a lovely visit and I really enjoyed the bacon the next morning.

Bob and Rose Riddell came on Boxing Day and brought me some new slipper socks and some coffee. Valerie was in on Wednesday but it was not a good day for me so she heard a lot of whining and complaining (my apologies). Alice and Harriet came in on Thursday and I was in a better mood. It was so nice to see them and have a nice chat.

Sympathy to Keith and Sandra Hollywood on the sudden passing of their son Cody.

Also had visits from Myles, Sharon and Amber, Shauna and the boys and I don’t remember who else.

On Wednesday, January 3rd I will be leaving Perth hospital to move to Tweed and I know I will miss all my friends – you are all so good to me. I feel depressed but hope to make new friends in Tweed. I hate that I will be so far away from all of you. I wonder what new adventures I’m going to have. I am sure there will be some nice people there and that helps. My family has all my stuff sorted and ready to move – thank you – that was a lot of work.

Thank you to all the nurses who have been wonderful and caring during my time here and to all my friends and family for their visits, meals, treats, coffee, hair sets, foot care, etc., etc. You all know who you are and I love you all so much. Please keep in touch. Don’t forget me. Love and kisses to all.
