Arden

What a sight last week, driving into Sharbot Lake, past the new ice rink. Many folks formed a work bee installing roof trusses on the existing rink. Seems that all 4 districts are relying on volunteer power to keep their communities happy. Rink repairs and new boards in Mountain Grove, new boards and repairs in Parham, new rink shack in Arden, and now a roof covering in Sharbot Lake. A note to those in charge of these committees: these volunteers are the backbone of your district, so don’t demean them because they will not volunteer again, and will usually take others with them!!

Congratulations to the Arden Legion and their receipt of a $1000.00 donation from Amherst Island Bingo. This donation was made because of the great participation by those in the Arden area who enjoy playing Bingo.

Mountain Grove will be hosting at Smorgasbord Supper, November 4, 5pm to

7pm at the Mountain Grove Hall. There will be a variety of home-cooked delicious main dishes, sides and desserts. A fee will donation would be appreciated.

Attention hunters and those who enjoy a social get-together. The Arden Legion

will be holding a Hunters’ Ball, November 18 at the branch. Tickets are $20.00

per person and will include a luncheon at 10pm, live entertainment and door

prizes. The contest rewarding hunters, in various categories, is returning to Arden.

Tickets can be purchased prior to November 4 at C 4 or the Legion for $10.00 each.

Land-o-Lakes Public School is in need of mittens and gloves. The Arden United church will accept your donation.

Remembrance Day is just around the corner. This is a time for all of us to count our blessings for our free country and to thank all of those before us who provided it for us. Lest we forget.

Early Bird Legion membership renewal ends November 30. Contact the Legion to see when the branch will be open.

Thinking of you, Connie Tryan.

Sorry folks, was a bit under the weather last week and missed my deadline. But I'm back in time for one last pumpkin joke of the season. What did the pumpkin say after Halloween? Good-pie everyone!

Travel alert - beginning Monday, November 6th - thru to Friday, November 24th inclusive, Brass Point Bridge on Burnt Hills Road will be completely closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This is to facilitate urgent repairs to both the fixed and swing sections of the bridge.

And a very happy birthday to Don in Parham on November 1st.

Michelle, welcome back to the Frontenacs!  You are definitely moving in the right direction.

I still have a significant box of lost and found from the Battersea Pumpkin Festival. I have everything from children's coats, to a bag of new purchases. If you could possibly pass this message around, I would like to return as much as I can. If you misplaced something that day, please call me at 613-353-6653.  I will give it another week or so, then donate the items to Battersea United Church.

Please plan to attend The Storrington Remembrance Day services on Saturday, November 11 at 10:45am at Sandhill Cemetery. We should never forget. Soup and fellowship will follow at the Storrington Lions Club in Sunbury.

Our own Mitchell Kelsey successfully got a moose out back of Timmins and it was some big indeed. Congratulations Mitchell. In our area, we are soon into that two-week family vacation of hunting season and folks are baking, preparing and getting organized for the influx. They ask us to respect the hounds that will also be “visiting” noting that most hounds will have ID and even a tracking collar so can be traced back to their “families” if lost. Thanks to all who always respect the property lines and no hunting signs- it means so much.

October 25th, 2023 (116 days in hospital). Olive and Kathy came in for a visit and brought some lovely flowers. It was great to see you both, especially Olive. We have been trying to see each other for months. Happy belated birthday to Kathy. I hope all goes well with the tests Olive is having on her legs.

Bev Ladurantaye got home today. Please be careful Bev – no more falls!

Robin and Kelly (my former roommate) were also in for a visit. They had taken a drive up 509 and found where I lived. Sorry to hear the news about your health, Kelly. Soldier on! I am praying for you.

Sharon and Pam were in and had coffee and visit with me as well.

On October 26th, Susan brought a coffee and we had a chat. Say hello to Waldo for me.

Rick brought in A&W burger and fries for my lunch and a special sticker for my wheelchair. It was a short visit as he was taking Alex to the dentist.

On the 27th, around 11 o’clock, Denzel and Yvonne brought me a Tim’s coffee, some chili and a bun, and an apple fritter and also a big box of 40 bags of chips so I can pass them out on Halloween.

Alice came in Friday afternoon with Jeannie Kelso and brought some supplies for me and some reading material. It was great to see them both – we had a lot of laughs. Alice brought greetings from my friend Red – looking forward to seeing you and Santa.

Get well wishes to Ruth Wark who has a dislocated shoulder. She will need some volunteers to help out with the breakfasts and the upcoming beef supper at the clubhouse.

Sympathy to the family of Elizabeth Rutherford.

Snow Road Community Centre:  Don’t forget the black and white Social Dinner on Wednesday, November 8th. Get ready for another great music night in November. The group “Turpin’s Trail” is performing on Thursday, November 30th.

This week's news:

The MacPherson boys entertained residents at the Retirement home in Sharbot Lake on Friday afternoon.

Helping the community is what the Lions Club in Sharbot Lake does best, but on Saturday at the Annual Seniors Day they needed assistance as some of their members were unable to attend due to sickness.  That's when Lions from the next area stepped up and supported them.  Thank you to them and also to this club for hosting a great afternoon of fun, food, fellowship and a fantastic time.  With Rob, a magician from Kingston, skits by the club and music with Riley Merrigan incidentally stepped up to fill in for his mom Leslie who came down with a migraine that morning.

Great fun and a lot of really cool costumes at the Halloween Dance at the hall in Mountain Grove on Saturday - thank you Mountain Grove Rec Committee for hosting such a wonderful event - it's nice to be able to have dances once again!

A big thank you to all the volunteers who worked diligently to install new boards on the west side at the Outdoor Rink in Tichborne on Sunday.  Many hands make light work for everyone and those who will use it later will so appreciate your efforts.  It was amazing to see the community come together to keep this hidden gem in operation.
