Arden
by Wanda Harrison

Connie Tryan, supervisor of the Kids Klub/Arden Knights program, decided to end the summer with a bang for her kids. Tuesday evening everyone participated in the Gross Olympics; a pie eating contest, feeding each other pudding while blindfolded, a couple of other messy sports and then a clean-up on the slip & slide. Moving to Thursday more outdoor games with lots of fun and many laughs. Everyone then feasted on a BBQ, with Arden Seniors as the cooks. There was also a cake to celebrate Connie’s Birthday. The evening ended with the kids making bubble snakes. Connie would like to thank everyone who helped make this 2-day event possible, along with those who gave cards and gifts and their love.

Hope everyone attended the Arden Artisans Open Studio event. It is great to see some regularity retuning to the Hamlet.

Arden’s own Judith Versaval and Aileen Merium invite you to join them at the Rideau Lakes Artist’s Association “Paint the Summer” Art show, held at the Westport Arena August 26 and 27, 10am to 4pm. The arena is located at 37 Spring Street, Westport, with parking and admission free!

Individuals’ family and friends can participate in the walk (approx. 45 minutes) or the North of 7 Race (approx. 45 minutes). Battersea/Storrington
by Amanda Pantrey

A customer in a store was holding up a pair of pants and said to the clerk “are these pants satin?”. The clerk replied, “No madam. They’re new.”

Thanks so much to Mark for this week’s joke! It gave me a really good chuckle!

This message comes with very mixed emotions and bittersweet emotions – After years of looking in this bizarre housing market, I have found a nice little place to start out. The catch is that it is outside of my beloved hometown of Battersea, so we need to find a new columnist for the Battersea column. My sincere hope is to return one day when I can. But for now, it looks like I’ll be on my way. I may have bought a house in a different community, but my home will always be Battersea. I won’t be a stranger as my folks and partner still live in Battersea, so don’t discount me too quickly. I will be around! Okay, on to the job posting. The column takes me about 20 minutes a week, and thankfully Catherine Reynolds puts together a beautiful community news email thread that I pull most events from, so sourcing information is easy-peasy. If you are interested in taking on the Battersea column, please let me know or email Jeff Green to get more details.

Sidewalk construction is set to begin in Battersea. That’s right! We’re getting a sidewalk from the bridge all the way to the park! Watch for workers, obey traffic signs, and take care driving through the village while work continues. We’ve been reassured the work will be done before the Pumpkin Festival. Fingers crossed everything goes according to schedule and we can make the festival safer for our visitors.

Big thanks to Donaven Sherbert and his crew for the repointing work on the Battersea gateway sign. It looks great!

Please support the next Community Food Bank Drive at/by Storrington Lions Club from 1 to 5pm on Friday, Sept. 8. Proceeds going to the Battersea United Church foodbank.

Tickets are selling fast for a Community Fish Fry at Storrington Lions Club Hall on Saturday, Sept. 23. This homemade meal includes warm, fall apple crisp. Eat-in or take out. Free parking and cash bar. Reserve your meal by Sept. 20 by calling 613-449-4744.

Enjoy food and fellowship at a Community BBQ at Storrington Lions Club Hall every Thursday from 5 to 8pm. This event includes cash bar and free parking.

Be part of Wild Woods Art Walk, a unique, enchanting outdoor installation of art along the Milburn Creek Trail happening in conjunction with Battersea Pumpkin Festival. Art will be displayed along the sides of the trail, hanging from trees, set up on rocks or logs. Have an idea or something you've made you want to share? From creative dabblers to experienced artists, all South Frontenac residents and Indigenous residents from across townships are invited to contribute art for this exhibition. Participation is voluntary. One day exhibit - October 14th. Three-week exhibit- October 1st- 22nd. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are interested or for more info.

The next organizing meeting for the Pumpkin Festival is September 18th at 7pm at the Battersea United Church Hall. All welcome! We are also in need of volunteers for the festival. Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

Pearl is very happy to have been moved to the Perth Hospital and gave me some items to put into her news column this week. I was admitted to KGH on 7 July and first few days are a little bit foggy as I was in a lot of pain but know that was caused by a hip fracture and a broken femur, and I had an operation to get that fixed up (she is now nailed together). I want to thank all the family and friends who took the time to visit me or send their get well messages while I was in Kingston and bring me treats and flowers and news from home.

I send sympathy to Penny Hawley and Chuck Johnston on the passing of their mother and sympathy to Ed.

Again thank you to the people who have stopped in to see me since I got moved to Perth on Tuesday, August 15th. It is nice to be closer to home. Wendy and Alice came in on Wednesday morning and Pam was in also. Thank you Elaine for the cold pork chop, the jam and ginger snaps and potato chips.

Thank you to Holly (Polished Spa) for the chocolate chip cookies and the foot treatment on Friday. That felt sooooo good.

Brian Forrester who I used to see at Sylvania Lodge stops in to say hello when he is visiting on the floor. He looks exactly the same as he always has.

I am doing my occupational therapy and managed to take 7 steps with someone helping me on either side. I have to be able to walk or I won’t be able to go home.

Thank you to Emily and Alice for dropping by today (Sunday) and to Alice for making some notes. Good to see Sharon and Shawna and my great grandson Hudson who tells me this is the first time he ever remembers being in a hospital.

Community Centre News: Wade Foster and Jeff Callery will be entertaining on Thursday, August 24th. Music starts at 7:30. Call Mike at 613-278-1581 for tickets or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Parham-Tichborne

Wow, what a great Parham Fair that was!!! A whirlwind weekend of fun stuff for the entire family!  Hope you were able to partake in at least a portion of this creat annual community get together!  Hats off to the Fair Board, organizers, volunteers, sponsors and anyone else that contributes just a little to make this happen.

Beautiful weather last Wednesday as the residents of the Seniors Home in Sharbot Lake as well as Community Living folks enjoyed lunch at the beach.

Condolences to Connie Southall on the death of her niece.

Happy 4th Wedding Anniversary to Eric & Muriel Wagar who celebrated on the 22nd.

Missing the Howes corn?? Give Mary Ellen a call at the Whan Farm 3345 Long Lake Road.

It was so nice to hear that council approved the Steeple Bell to become a special monument where the St. James Anglican Church used to be until the fire of 2020 destroyed this beautiful building with all the beautiful stained glass windows, Bibles, pews, photos and all the memories of special events that were held there.   A lot of work, effort and thought went into the proposal and the community of Parham thank all of those on the committee and for everyone who made this project become a reality.

Thinking of you in thoughtful prayers to William Lowery, Mike Price, Gary Drew, Linda Lowery, Frank Goodfellow.  Also to those in NWT and out west fearing their safety because of the fires.

Don't forget the ball tournament this weekend in Parham for the Whan Family, there will be some great ball games and raffle items up for grabs.  Thank you to everyone for supporting this amazing family.

Plevna
by Rhonda Watkins

Our fish pick of the week was a 4 pound pickerel caught on Canonto Lake with a worm harness by young Alex W. It was too big so it was returned to the lake to have more Pickerel for the future fishers. Alex was visiting from Peterborough and had gone to Ontario Fisher and Anglers day camp this summer and learned all about “slot size”. He helped Sandy S (who is also in the pic) measure it. Sandy was impressed that he was not upset at all about releasing his first big fish because he understood the reason from what he had learned at camp. Sandy is very proud!!

Our Plevna Clar-Mill Hall Community Volunteers meeting last Thursday was a great start. There are such a wide variety of people with so much talent! We are currently working on our group constitution. If you are interested in meeting new people and making a difference in your community, come on out to our next meeting Thurs Aug 31 at 6:30pm.

29 people were out to Euchre last Tuesday night. Congratulations Lillian S who won a high score with 95 and the big fish gift bag! It was filled with everything she needed to catch a big one! Congratulations also to Phil F who won most lone hands with 6 and went home with his very own floaty seat for the lake with not one, but two drink holders! The consolation prize was a brand-new big roll of duct tape for Mike C.

Thank you to everybody who came out to play and donate to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. $188.50 was raised that night! The next game night is this Tuesday night at the Clar-Mill Hall in Plevna at 6598 Buckshot Lake Road. Please come around 6:45 to find a seat, so games can start at 7pm.

Have you had a chance to visit the Mega Yard Sale yet at 1142 Overton Road? It is well worth the drive up Buckshot Lake Road! I took a tour up to their acre filled spot on Sunday and was very pleased! I couldn't believe everything they had to offer. I was looking for a birthday present for my daughter and found the perfect gaming chair that she wanted and they even had it in her favourite colour, red! I also left with a blood pressure machine, oscillating pedestal fan and a water pick. If there is something you need, I highly recommend taking a shop here first! The service is fabulous; they even found me cardboard and some plastic to wrap up the gaming chair to get it home safely. They are open Sat and Sun 9-4pm weather permitting. Two thumbs up for the Mega Yard Sale!!

Happy 60th Anniversary on Aug 10th to long time  Brule Lake cottage residents Shirley and John Albinson! Our community wishes you many more happy years!!

Congratulations to Samantha (Schonauer) and Anthony Crausen who tied the knot in a beautiful outdoor ceremony this past weekend!
