Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

It has been a busy week. A big note of thanks to Holly for my foot care on Monday and then coming back on Friday and putting up a new curtain for the window at my front door. Erma came on Tuesday for a visit. Thank you, Alice, for waiting with me for the phone appointment with my cancer doctor and taking down the notes.

Thank you, Rick, for doing all my running on Wednesday – banking, picking up pills, etc – when I was too sick to go to my doctor’s appointment. Thank you, Alisha for coming to my house to do my bloodwork and blood pressure check, etc. That was so appreciated.

I got to meet a beautiful, tiny, tiny little girl on Thursday when Dale and Taylor brought their new daughter Addison to see me. She is adorable and thank you so much for stopping in.

On Friday, Cheryl Allan picked up some pills and other things at the drug store and delivered them to my home. She also brought me three beautiful red roses. I also had a visit from Harriet and Joan Riddell on Friday evening. Thank you, Joan for the chocolates and the homemade zucchini bread.

On Saturday, Raymond Riddell dropped in before heading to Harriet’s 90th birthday party. Thank you to the Riddells for all the goodies and the two big pieces of birthday cake. I was sorry not to be well enough to go. Thank you, Tracy Riddell for sending these notes for my news.

An early birthday celebration was held on Saturday, July 1st at the Snow Road Snowmobile Club for Harriet Riddell who will be 90 Years YOUNG on December 7th, 2023.

Family, friends and neighbours from Windsor to Ottawa joined in the festivities. A HUGE Thank you to everyone who prepared food (loads of food), brought drinks, decorated and visited with all of us on this special occasion as we celebrated such an incredible woman. Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt Harriet has set quite the example for so many, her continued spunk, sarcasm and surprises keeps everyone on their toes and then some. We somehow kept Grandma under control! The photos will be reminders of what a wonderful day it was, thanks Robin Riddell, great idea! Thank you to Emily O for planning everything, you are amazing and always up for a challenge.

On Sunday, Elaine and Chloe came with cookies. Thank you, Elaine – your operation was a booming success! Sorry to hear you are having some issues and may need a new memory chip.

It was super to have Ruth Jackson here for 3 days. We had a wonderful visit, a great time with lots of food and a great weekend seeing so many friends.

To all my friends – many of you know I got bad news regarding my cancer but I am taking it well. I want all my friends to know how much I appreciate them. You are all wonderful and so kind to me. I appreciate all you do for me.

Community Centre News: Multiple award-winning Blues guitarist Lloyd Spiegel stopped by between major festivals and played an amazing concert at Snow Road Community Centre. Guitar magic and great stories were thoroughly enjoyed by a sell-out crowd.

Jon Jones entertains on July 27th. For a complete change of pace - a solo performer with a sparse finger style, he will entertain with covers of his favourites including the Beatles, Jackson Brown, Tom Petty, and Neil Young.  Contact Mike at 613-278-1583 for tickets.

Don’t forget the strawberry social on Saturday, July 8th at the Community Centre.

Ompah
by Linda Rush & Marily Seitz

We hope everyone had a festive and reflective Canada Day.

Stan Seitz, Masters Track and Field athlete, claims another Ontario record in the 75-79 age category.  In high jump, the previous record was 110 cm.  Last week he blew through that, setting a new record at 125 cm.  Congratulations Stan.

The last Community Cafe for the summer was held in Ompah.  The theme was 'Cognitive Health'.  The naturopathic doctor presented suggestions on how to maintain and improve your cognitive health. KFPL Library showed kits that could be borrowed that focused on memory and ancestry.  The Alzheimer Society reminded us that there is an office in Northbrook with resources available.  Keeping seniors healthy and at home is the mission of Community Paramedics.  They spoke of the program where paramedics can come to your home to help maintain your health.  One of the paramedics took blood pressure etc. for those who wished.  They hope to attend most Cafe's when they start up again in the fall.  Thank you to Juana and Laura for organizing the informative Cafe's and feeding us well after the programs.

The Ompah Community Centre Association will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, July 15 at 10.  Members will be electing 2 directors to serve on the executive committee.  If you are unable to attend, a membership may be purchased for $1.00 from President Katie Worden or Secretary Marily Seitz before or at the AGM.  Everyone is welcome to attend and join the Association.

If you missed Music Night at Snow Road last week, you really missed a fabulous show.  Australian Lloyd Spiegel, award winning international guitarist/singer/songwriter put on a relaxed but captivating performance.  His guitar playing was exquisite and his voice powerful. He also was a really funny storyteller.  I'm certainly glad I had gone and would go to see him again anytime.

Hope everyone had a great Canada Day and flew their flag proudly.

Next Lions Club Breakfast will be July 15th at the OSO Hall in Sharbot Lake in support of the Blind Golf.

Our apologies to Elayna Jackson for misspelling her name

Graduation ceremonies for Sydenham High School & GREC were held last Thursday. Valedictorians Franklin Goodfellow and Elayna Jackson did a marvelous job of recalling the last few ears of their educational journey.  Kudos to all the graduates of 2023 as it was not an easy task with the pandemic and all other obstacles that had to be dealt with.  Their families, friends, teachers and communities are so proud of their accomplishment.  Best wishes to all as they either continue their education, take time off or enter the work force.

Sympathy to the family of the late Les Whan.  Celebration of life this Saturday for Norm McIntosh.

Remember: on Sunday, July 9th there will be a vendor event at 14569 Hwy 38 in Sharbot Lake (beside old dollar store) to support District #4 Recreation Committee and a prize table supporting Henderson United Church from 10am to 2pm.

Thinking of you to Natalie Witherspoon.

Last call for vendors at the Parham Fair market on August 19th.  Looking for artisans or people with garage sale items.  Only $25.00 to register.  Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Next week in Baseball in Parham we have: Sunday July 9th the U13 at 5 pm. Tuesday, July 11 - Grasshoppers at 630. Wednesday, July 12 - U13 at 630 followed by U19 at 830.

Are you missing your cockatiel?? A beautiful grey and white cockatiel found its way to GREC recently. If you are missing this sweet bird, please call me and I will put you in touch with the one who is looking after your bird.
