Friends and relatives of Helen Praskey gathered Saturday for her Celebration of Life. A life well lived, remembered for her great accomplishments in retirement in Arden - Glee Club and Tai Chi, just to name a few. Helen strived for excellence. There was a wonderful luncheon and memories, some sad, and some humorous, as we thanked her for being part of our life!

Judy Kennedy and the Friends of Arden would like to thank the 18 volunteers and the 3 lunch makers who helped spruce up Arden’s intersections, trails, and flower beds last Thursday. In her words, the village looks “loved” and ready for summer.

The Arden Legion would like to thank Jones Contracting for their work in the parking lot, at the side of the building. They have also donated a timber events board, which will soon be installed.

On Saturday, July 8, there will be an Open Mic at the Arden Legion, 1pm to 5pm. Following, there will be a fish and chip dinner, adults $20.00, kids $10.00, and children 6 and under are free. Tickets are available at the Legion, C4 Convenience, Sharbot Lake Pharmasave, and from Mitch and Renee. On Sunday, July 9, 11am to 3pm, the Historical Society will hold their Annual Strawberry Social. There will be a variety of items from the past, some known to folks and others not. Come out and enjoy a tasty strawberry shortcake and maybe pick up some home baking or jams for you to take home. Volunteers or donators can call Sarah at 613-335-2073 or Reg at 613-336-2388.

There will be a pop-up vendor sale, Sunday, July 9, at 14569 Road 38 in Sharbot Lake, 10am to 2pm. The sale is in support of the District 4 Recreation Committee and the Henderson United Church. There will be many vendors and a fantastic prize table. Please bring a donation to the Food Bank, if you can.

Happy 50th Anniversary to Ron and Alice Gilchrist from Snow Road. Hope their party was wonderful just like they are. Sorry I couldn’t make it but I heard it was great.

Note from Alice and Ron: We did have a lovely “surprise” gathering at the Community Centre with family, friends and neighbours from near and far. All your good wishes, hugs, and special gifts are greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Pearl for her lovely poem, especially knowing how hard it is for her to write.

Thank you, Gail Hermer, for the fresh green onions from your garden – all cleaned and ready to eat. They were delicious and thank you for fixing my toilet.

Thank you, Donna Virgin, for the bouquet of pink peonies – they still look beautiful.

Thank you, Elaine, for taking me to Westport on Friday to see a doctor about my hand. I enjoyed the drive and your company very much. Thank you, Terry for buying our lunch at the Country Kitchen in Westport. It was so appreciated.

I had a great visit with my daughter Pam on Sunday.

Ompah
by Linda Rush & Marily Seitz

As I write this on Sunday morning, the air is smoky from the fires in Quebec.   Community Centres are available as 'clean air' spaces if air quality becomes very bad.  Check with the township to see if they have activated the 'clean air' plan.

Tim blew out his candle and made a wish at the June Birthday Bash.  As usual there was a feast of entree's, salads and desserts.  Announcements were made of up coming events around the township, followed by a good discussion of fire preparation, what to take with you if you have to evacuate, as well as what to have in your GO Bag which should be ready at all times.  The next Bash will be on Wed., July 19 at 6:00.  Everyone is welcome.

On Saturday, July 8 there will be a SURPRISE birthday party for Leta Kirkwood from 1 to 4 at the hall.  Leta is a former long-time resident who will be in Ompah for a visit that weekend. Everyone who wants to wish Leta happy birthday is welcome.  It is suggested that folks arrive around 1.  Leta will be told that there is a craft and bake sale at the hall.  She will arrive around 1:15 and will hopefully be very surprised!  Best wishes only please as Leta celebrates her 92nd birthday.

Welcome Summer, and Happy Canada Day this weekend.  Please be aware of, and abide by, the township fire levels.

Sydenham
by Karen Brawley

Schools… out… for… summer!  Congratulations to all the graduates this year. Thanks to all the teachers, support staff and volunteers who made returning to classrooms post Covid as less stressful as possible for the kids.  Enjoy your summer, everyone.

Slither the Sydenham Rock Snake has arrived… you can find SLITHER along the side of the trail starting towards the lake side by Foodland.   Paint a rock, and add to our snake, let’s see how long we can grow this summer.  Please be mindful of those using the trail and keep your addition to the edge of trail.

Canada Day is going to be amazing this year. For the first year, Sydenham will be hosting the finale fireworks display at 9:45pm, but that’s not all. There is a full schedule in the Canada Day supplement (pp7-9).

The Sydenham Legion will have BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs starting at 12:30, and karaoke from 2-6pm, so if it’s too warm outside and you need a place to cool down or warm up your singing voice, make it one of your stops.  Someone will be driving   away on a brand new 2023 artic cat 4-wheeler, check to see if tickets are still available.  200 being sold, draw at 4pm.

Family Fishing Week from July 1st to July 9th, license free fishing.  What a great week to put your arm in a cast.

Turtles are beginning to hatch, and a popular location seems to be the bridge at the mill pond. Please try to avoid running them over as safely as possible, or help them to a safe location.
