The Kennebec Recreation Committee would like to send out a huge thank you to Dave and Dawn Hansen, Leslie Merrigan and all of the other members of the Sharbot Lake and District Lions for their very generous donation, and lovely luncheon Saturday the 6th. It was a great get together over lunch, and the donation was a complete surprise. Thanks to all!!

There will be two very large events Saturday the 13th. First, the Arden United Church will host a Community Yard Sale at Springwood Cottage Resort. There will be a variety of vendors selling their goods as well as a cash canteen. On the same day, there will be a Giant Flea Market held at the Parham Ball Field. There will be an all you can eat breakfast sponsored by the Sharbot Lake and District Lions Saturday, May 20, 8am to 11am at the Oso Hall. Adults $10.00 and Kids 6-10 $6.00. This breakfast is in support of Villages Beautiful.

Just a reminder about regular events in Arden. Tuesday, Kids Club 5pm, and Euchre 7pm., Wednesday Tai Chi 9:30am, Thursday Stretch and Strengthen 9:30am and Kids Klub 5pm. These programs are all held at the Kennebec Community Centre. The Arden Legion hosts Bingo at 6pm sharp and Euchre 7pm., both every Thursday at the Legion. Thursday mornings the United Church hosts Coffee and Conversation at 10am.

An offering from Dog and Cranberry Lake Association: What Covid Taught Us About Bass Fishing; a presentation by Dr. David Philipp, avid angler and researcher into fish genetics. The Association is pleased to present this community event on Thursday May 11th from 7-8:30pm at the Storrington Centre. All welcome.

The Dog and Cranberry Lakes Association is holding a Native Plant Sale. 9 species of beautiful perennial plants that are hearty in this area and attract pollinators, are available for sale. 4" pots are $5 for members and $6 for non-members. The next youth dance at the Storrington Lion’s Club will be May 19th. All grades 5 – 8 are welcome. Admission is $5, and the canteen will be open. See the Lion’s Club website for the event rules.

The library has new operating hours. The Storrington Branch will be closed on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, Friday’s, and Sundays. On Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, it is open from 1 pm – 6pm, and on Saturday’s, it is open from 9am – 2pm.

Volunteers are wanted for the South Frontenac Summer Kickoff Music Festival taking place on May 27th from 4pm – 10pm at Centennial Park in Harrowsmith. There are lots of opportunities to help out. Mother’s Day Event - The Denbigh Recreation Committee is having a Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea on Saturday, May 13 from 1 to 3pm at the Denbigh Hall.  There will be prizes for the best dressed and best hat or fascinator. You can purchase a ticket by making a donation at Rosie’s Café or Glaeser’s Country Store or make a donation the day of the event.

Condolences to Karen Harvey (Peters), friends, and family, on the recent loss of Lynn who battled cancer for many years. She will be missed in this community.

Councillor Nicki Gowdy will be hosting a breakfast on Saturday, May 13 at Piccadilly Hall from 8-10:30.  It is free and the fire department will be there for recruitment and fire prevention as well as letting residents see the trucks and equipment.  District 4 Recreation Committee will also be represented to let residents know of activities and recruitment of new members.  Rural Frontenac Community Services will have a table set up with information on their programs and volunteer recruiting will also take place.

Help with weeding, planting, watering, and harvesting!

No garden experience is required.

The produce from the garden is used in Meals on Wheels and given to food bank clients.

The Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT) committee invite you to a presentation about Privacy and Home Security.  O.P.P. Constable Jamie Davis will discuss the current laws regarding video surveillance, doorbell cameras, and home security systems in Ontario. There will also be a discussion on how best to protect your home from intruders and theft.  

A hot lunch will be served following the presentation. Guests may choose to stay and eat lunch at the centre or take the lunch home.

Our Pine Meadow people celebrated their annual Super Hero/Heroine walk and their many accomplishments while frolicking in the warmer weather and dodging the black flies!!

Tomorrow- Fri. May 12 the Land O’Lakes Emmanuel United Church (108 Addington Rd. 2) in Northbrook and the Alzheimer Society are teaming up to host a mammoth yard sale from 9am – 2pm at the United Church site- rain or shine and it will also feature sales of home made pies and baked goods offered by the church folks. Then on Sat, May 13 from 9am – 1pm a large community yard sale is happening at Springwood Cottages (1018 Blue Heron Ridge) where Arden United Church is hosting a food canteen along with a table or two. Tammy Whitelock thanks folks for their help with the Cloyne Big Chair project and reports that the North Frontenac Township has accepted the donated chair and that the Pioneer Museum folks have granted permission to place it on their museum property. Stay tuned for more details of this exciting and ongoing community project.

Sincere thanks to the FRONTENAC ADDINGTON TRAPPERS' COUNCIL, who, despite rain, hosted a fantastic Trapper Carnival recently in Flinton. Teams of volunteers brought their families to help out, along with many vendors who filled the hall and the rink. The Rec Committee made sure that everyone had food and warm drink to keep off the chill, and our trappers offered learning, insights and ideas for all ages- fulfilling their mandate of conservation, education and participation - big time. This non-profit, founded in 1980, offers many conservation projects, help with nuisance wildlife, duck nesting boxes, Youth Trapper Education Program, scholarships, bursaries, trapping and conservation courses. You do us proud!

Looking to the future, be sure to set aside Sat. Sept. 16 for the 75th anniversary reunion of Sharbot Lake High School at the GREC site (same location as Sharbot Lake Hish School-just a different building) from 1- 5pm. This meet and greet is for all former staff, students and guests, and there is no registration, and no fees. Come and have a rootin tootin time!

The Maberly Hall was filled with enthusiastic fiddlers galore on Sunday.  The Jam-a-thon, put on by Blue Skies Fiddle Orchestra, was back after three years off due to Covid.  The Fiddle Orchestra beginners started off playing with several tunes,  joined by whoever was there with any kind of instrument.   Then five other groups played pieces also joined by others.  The day ended with the Fiddle Orchestra playing an eclectic set, led by director Cindy McColl.

Just a reminder that the May Birthday Bash will be held on Wed., May 17 at 6.  Everyone is welcome.  It does not have to be your birthday in order to attend.  Bring a dish to share and a toonie for the hall.

Parham United Church Reunion - If you attended Parham United Church, Sunday School, Youth Group, Explorers, please plan to join us for a Parham United Church Reunion. This church service will take place on Sunday, June 25th at 11:30am at Parham Fairgrounds and the service will be led by Rev. Shelley Roberts with special music by Stanley Stinchcombe, David McCullough, Kathy Lowery-King and Katie, and Jordan Lowery and Collin Hamilton. There will be a BBQ lunch to follow, after the church service. In case of rain it will be held at Parham United Church and CE Centre.

The next Lions Club Breakfast will be held on May 20th at the OSO township hall in Sharbot Lake.  The profits will help the Local Village Beautiful Projects.

Sincere condolences to the families who lost loved ones including Lynn (Peters) Smail, Heather (Moyst) Gillespie and Dorothy Kehoe.  Thinking of you all at this difficult time.

Don't forget to drop by Parham Ball Field on Saturday, May 13 from 10 to 2 to check out the amazing vendors we have on site.  There will be flea market items as well as new crafts that our vendors will be selling.  The District #4 Recreation Committee will have the canteen open where you can grab lunch - you remember the poutine that you have been craving all winter long!!!  As well, there will be a bake table  under the covered section of the canteen - lots of yummy goodies.  The Oddfellows will have their tickets available with some great prizes.  Please come out and support our vendors!

While you are at the Ball Field, please check out the beautiful fence that the Recreation Committee along with Richard Benn built along the Fairgrounds and Wagarville Road - great work to all those involved!  Looks amazing!

Beginning Thursday, May 18, Sharbot Lake Legion will be hosting a weekly open mic. Every Thursday (until summer) at the legion from 1-4pm. By donation. Bring your own instruments or just your singing voice. With your musical contribution we will strive to keep classic country/bluegrass/gospel music alive on the open mic stage. We're looking forward to seeing dear friends at this event.

If you are a North Frontenac Resident/Property Owner circle May 27th on your calendar to get free trees to assist with forest regeneration efforts to recover from the 2022 Derecho. It is first come first serve and starts at 9am at 6638 Buckshot Lake Road in Plevna. Reserving of trees is not permitted and there will be a limit of certain species. 1-2 year old trees are available; including, Red Sunset Maple, Eastern White Cedar, Sugar Maple and White Oak. Four times a year, Canadian Residents can fish in Ontario for FREE. This means you do not need to buy a fishing license! This Mothers Day Weekend, May 13 and 14th, is one of those times! You can also fish for FREE on Fathers Day weekend June 17-18, Family Fishing week July 1-9th and Family Fishing Weekend February 18-20. Happy fishing, everybody!!

Today, May 11th is the 25th Anniversary of Lonnie Watkins Tree Service in Ardoch! It all started with an ice storm in 1998 and the purchase of a wood chipper and borrowing his Dad's tractor. Today, Lonnie no longer has that wood chipper, but this family run business now has 3 tractors; including his favourite tractor; Bob! You will often see Lonnie out and about taking down trees or cleaning up big messes. If you see Lonnie, please wish him a Happy Anniversary!
