In presenting the five murals that North Frontenac artists have completed for 2023, North Frontenac Councillor John Inglis, who chairs the economic development task force, noted that the program started in 2017, this the 7th year.
The murals are placed at strategic locations around the township as a way to beautify township assets, even waste sites and works yards, and to celebrate the beauty of the local landscape and the artists within the township who take their inspiration from it.
“We are aware that these murals are outside and they deteriorate over time, so they have a lifespan,” he said. Some of these murals will be replacing ones from before, and some will be going into new locations.
Township staff then brought in the murals, one by one, which was not as simple a task as it might sound, since they were all painted onto ¾” 4 x 8 sheets of plywood.
The first mural to be brought in was Anne Garrett’s “Relax and Spend Some Time” (see photo) which was the first mural that she has made for the program. The second was a large format photograph by veteran muralist Michelle Ross. It is of a field with round bales. “One of the few flat spots in the whole township.” Inglis said. It will be placed at the entrance to the township waste site on Road 506.
The third mural to be presented was by Leanne and Brian Bailey, of Art by the Baileys. It is called “Cottage View” and is destined for the Public Works Garage site at Lavant Road.
The 4th mural was created by Roxanne Bay. It is called “End of the Day on the Lake '' and is going to the Palmerston Lake Boat Launch at Arcol Road.
And the 5th (also pictured) is Sonja Alcock’s “Joys of Winter”.
The artists were all on hand for the presentation (with the exception of Roxanne Bay, who was represented by her husband) and received certificates from the township. The murals were temporarily displayed around the walls of the council chamber for the duration of the council meeting.
