16th Annual Rock 'n Roll Toy Drive

They are going to be at it again next Saturday night.

Inveterate rocker Tom Revell is bringing his own '60s/'70s band Bauder Road, and will share the stage with Dark Horse, Still Standing, Ten Cent Hat, The Fonzies and other friends in the dance party to end all dance parties, all for a cause that only gains in importance each year.

Proceeds from the dance and silent auction will be shared between the Loughborough Christmas & Emergency Relief Committee and Verona’s Christmas for Kids for their yearly campaigns.

This year's dance marks the start of 16th annual Rock 'n Roll Toy Drive, a Christmas tradition in South Frontenac that provides Christmas presents for families who would not otherwise be able to give them out to their children.

“Everybody works hard to give the best for their children, but sometimes there is no money left over for extras, such as presents, and we raise money for these groups who do such a good job matching presents to families who need them,” said Revell, who works as a youth counselor in his day job.

The group putting on the dance, which is headed by Jamie Deline and Rebecca Wagar, is also seeking donations from area businesses to help in this fundraising event. Contributions will be greatly appreciated in helping give area children a present on Christmas morning. They can be reached through the “16th annual Rockn'roll Toy Drive” Facebook page.

The dance starts at 8 pm and tickets are $20 per person, which includes raffles, silent auctions and an 11pm buffet. They are available at the Legion, E-Clips Hair Salon in Sydenham, Sydenham Pet & Food Supply or by contacting one the organizers directly. They will also be available at the door on the night of the dance.

Mom 2 Mom Sale in Sharbot Lake

In an effort to give local area moms a chance both to give and receive new and gently used clothing and toys for their children, a first time “Mom 2 Mom” sale was held at St. James Major Catholic Church in Sharbot Lake on October 17. Organized by Jennifer Ross, chair of the parent council at St. James Major Catholic School in Sharbot Lake, the sale was initiated as a way for local moms and their kids to get connected, network, and support each other as well as to exchange, sell or purchase items they are in need of. Organizers offered up an inexpensive not for profit lunch for moms and their kids as well as coffee and tea. A few youngsters had a chance to demonstrate their entrepreneurial spirit and sold lemonade at one the tables in the hall. Ross said that Sharbot Lake was chosen as the location since it is central. “Those moms who would normally have to travel to Perth or Kingston or even further afield to find the items they are looking for may indeed find exactly what they are looking for right here”.

Having the sale in the early fall before winter arrives also gives moms a chance to purchase or exchange the items they need for the colder weather as well as to do a bit of early shopping for the upcoming holiday season. Ross said that based on the turnout, she may consider making the event an annual or bi-annual one. Proceeds from the event will support the parent council at St. James Major School and will help to fund various school activities and programs.

Fall Fair for CAP at Harrowsmith FMC

B.J. Calver, who heads up the local and international missions program at the Harrowsmith Free Methodist Church, was thrilled with the turn out at the church's annual Fall Fair on October 17. The event attracted hundreds of shoppers and included close to 50 local vendors, who were offering up everything from hand made crafts, comestibles and a wide range of gift ware. Organizers also offered visitors a huge bake sale table, fresh funnel cakes, and a Chili Plus Cafe, with all the food proceeds funding the HFMC's Community Assistance Program (CAP).

The CAP program offers financial assistance to members of the local community in need of food, heat, and emergency relief due to fire. CAP also funds the church's Christmas Hamper Program and through its partnership with Southern Frontenac Community Services also provides emergency food vouchers and other financial relief to local families in need. Calver and her husband Ray, who have been doing voluntary mission work in the Dominican Republic for close to 20 years, have through their partnership with the HFMC been able to build a church and school in Barrio Tona, a town just outside of Porta Plata in the Dominican Republic.

Shoppers who attended this year's sale were intrigued with the plethora of unique items for sale and new and notable this year were Miche purses and Birkenstock foot ware. Other first time vendors included Orna-Metal metal art, and Boutique Originals, who sell a wide array of primitive recycled Christmas crafts. Calver said that she was hoping to exceed the $2600 in donations raised at last year's event and judging by the turn out, it looked as though that hope could easily become a reality.

The second installment of the Arden Legion's Open Mic event on October 10 attracted more than double the musicians compared to the inaugural event two weeks earlier. Organizers are hoping to see the event continue to gain in popularity and with that in mind have decided to make it a regular event, which will take place on the second Saturday of every month from 1 - 6pm. To date the open mic is not only attracting local talent but also musicians from afar willing to travel a considerable distance to have the opportunity to play. That was the case for Linda Faith of Kingston who made the trip from Kingston on October 10 to sing her three-song country set that included Willie Nelson's “Remember Me”, and Flatt and Scruggs' “Gimme My Flowers While I'm Living”. She said she made the trip since she loves “to get out and play and socialize with other musicians.” Marg and Dwayne Taylor, both musicians and singers who recently retired and returned to live full time in Arden, are thrilled to have a local regular venue where they can play and meet other local players. Local musician Larry Birney of Arden, who plays and sings and “loves to jam”, initiated the event. He approached members of the Legion with the idea of a regular open mic in the hopes of giving local players a chance to get together regularly.

Theresa Hooiveld, whose partner Peter has participated at both events, is the official name taker and at the second installment, participants were invited to play up to three songs. However, she states that number can change, based on the number of players who show up. The Legion's fund-raising chair, Malcolm Sampson, said that a similar event was started three or four years ago but eventually fizzled out. He said that the second Saturday was decided upon since it does not conflict with other similar musical events in the area.

Legion volunteers open up the kitchen and bar for the open mic, which so far has been free of charge for listeners and players alike. Sampson hopes to see the event catch on, especially in the winter months, since it will make for a warm and cozy way to spend a musical afternoon.

Milk bag mats work bee

Twenty people were busy as bees sorting, cutting, looping and weaving at the Milk Bag Mat Work Bee on September 28 in Vennachar. With the number of hands processing the milk bags, two mats that were in the very early stages on two looms are just shy of being complete. Milk bags are ideal for making into mats as they hold up very well in hot countries and do not break down like other plastic bags would. The mats are large enough for an adult, or for two children and may be used as a sleeping mat or as a surgical mat, as they are hypoallergenic. So where do the completed mats go? A connection has been made with a couple who volunteers with Ontario Christian Gleaners. The Gleaners are a collection depot for the mats and use them to pack soup bases and dried fruit, products which their volunteers make and send overseas. So the mats end up having a two-fold purpose: providing free packing material, helping to support the work the Gleaners do, and provide a bed for someone in need.

There are still more milk bags to process and more arriving daily, and so another work bee is set for Monday, October 26, 9:30 to 11:30am at the Vennachar FM parsonage, 357 Matawatchan Road. Everyone is welcome. Thank you to all who have donated bags and who continue to do so. Hundreds of bags are needed to make just one mat, so please continue saving your milk bags. Call Nancy at 613-333-2204 if you have bags to donate. You can visit the Gleaners website at ontariogleaners.org to learn more about their amazing projects.

SL Seniors enjoy a special guest

Members of the Sharbot Lake 39ers seniors group, who meet monthly in the downstairs room at the North Frontenac Phone Company, were joined by a special guest at their most recent lunch time gathering on October 6. Famed local young fiddler and step dancer, Jessica Wedden, who has become well known not only for her fiddling and playing but also her trick playing and step dancing, has been fiddling for just over three years and has performed on many stages across the province. She has won numerous awards. She was accompanied by her mother Valerie on bass and Norm Herns on guitar and the three entertained the small but very appreciative group with a selection of tunes from her brand new CD. Wedden's grandmother Dolly Wedden, now deceased, had been a long-time member of the seniors group and was remembered fondly by those present. One member of the group commented that Jessica's playing would definitely have made her grandmother proud. Jessica will be playing with the Larry Mercey Trio at a Christmas Concert in Owen Sound on November 15. For more information about this talented young fiddler visit her website at www.JessicaWedden.ca and to see videos of her playing, visit her facebook page.

Central Frontenac Soccer Association

Each soccer season is very gratifying for our committee members. We put a lot of effort into planning and coordinating and are rewarded when we finally get to see the kids on the fields playing. We have seen the players develop their skills over the years and it is amazing that this sport continues to be available to the kids in our area.

Some of our members have been involved and volunteering their time for over 10 years. With changing personal commitments, some of us will not be able to continue to volunteer in the capacity that we have been and new members are needed. Without new volunteers, Central Frontenac soccer will not be able to continue for the 2016 season. If your child loves the sport of soccer, you need to think about volunteering. There are various positions and tasks including chair, secretary, treasurer, referee coordinator, media liaison, and more. A committee like this works best with many members doing small parts to divide and share the work. The committee meets a few times each year to sort out positions, to plan, and to assign tasks and goals. We will be holding a wrap-up meeting on September 16 at 7pm at the Medical Centre, lower level, in Sharbot Lake. If you want to see soccer available for your children next year, come out to get more information and show your interest in continuing the sport of soccer in our community.
