Last Friday (October 4) a Canadian Blood Services clinic was held at the district 3 Firehall on Road 38 and Wagner Road, just south of Sharbot Lake.
The clinic came about because Lesley Merrigan of the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team contacted Debbi Barfoot, Community Development Manager with Canadian Blood Services in Kingston.
“There are a lot of moving parts when we set up one of these satellite clinics,” said Barfoot at the clinic, “and depending on how this one goes, we might come back to Sharbot Lake on a more regular basis.”
There were 35 new donors among those who signed up to donate at the clinic, which is a very encouraging sign.
“That is one of the successes of this clinic,” she said.
A number of the people who came to donate were not able to do so, with the most common reason being that their body temperature exceeded 37 degrees Celsius when it was taken just before they were to donate.
Debbi Barfoot said that even if they did not donate this time, they were now registered as donors, and she encouraged them to try again at the walk-in clinics in Kingston that are open 4 days a week, year-round.
