In School Mentoring Programby Jeff Green Big Brothers of Kingston is seeking volunteers in the Frontenacs for their In-School Mentoring program. With the participation of the Limestone District School board and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Board, the in-school mentoring program provides an opportunity for someone from "any walk of life, man, woman, student, retiree, married or single, to get involved," says Tracy Holland of Big Brothers/Kingston, "and it only involves a one-hour commitment each week." Volunteers will be paired with students referred to the program from local schools. "Children who are not fulfilling their potential, not making friends, or not thriving in the school environment, are the ones we generally see referred by the schools. Sometimes just having someone from outside of the school to relate to, play games with, play in the gym, or just hang out with for an hour, can be really helpful. "Building a positive, new friendship strengthens a mentee's self esteem and in-school performance, and provides a mentor with a chance to re-experience the adventure of childhood." The program has been in place for three years using co-op students from Sharbot Lake High School for the past three years, but is now seeking adults mentors for all the primary schools in the Frontenacs. Tracy Holland says "we have had a hard time matching children in some of the rural areas. With this program we are open even to retirees who are away for a part of the year. The in-school mentoring is also a good way for people to get involved with the Big Brothers because it does not require a large time commitment." So what are you waiting for?
