Central Frontenac loses a committed volunteer Marsden Kirk

Marsden_Kirk_Passes_AwayMarsden Kirk, former Kennebec District councillor on Central Frontenac Council, and one of the key workers on the township 911 project, died on Sunday at his home near Arden.

Marsden and his wife Irene became full time residents in Kennebec in 1993, and their activities have epitomized the impact of so-called young seniors on the local scene. They have both been members of the Arden Glee Club, among other pursuits.

Before moving to Arden, the Kirks lived in Mississauga, where Marsden was a self-employed accountant for many years, a practice he maintained on a part-time basis after moving to Arden. As well, he was a director of Sheridan College.

He was drafted into the 911 project in 1998 and put countless hours into bringing the project forward to the point where it is expected to be implemented sometime in 2004. His work on the 911 committee got him involved in township politics, and he was elected to Council in 2000.

During his term, Marsden was known as a highly prepared councillor, always coming to meetings with a background on the issues, and, being an accountant, a sense of the effects of decisions on the finances of the township, both in the near and longer term.

Central Frontenac Mayor Bill MacDonald, in expressing his sadness at hearing of Marsden Kirks death, said he had considered him someone who knew the issues, was willing to hear other opinions, and always thought of the interest of the township as a whole. His was an opinion I always sought, MacDonald said.

This is something we can concur with at the News. In any interview, Marsden Kirk was always courteous and forthright, and expressed opinions that were well formulated and reflective. In municipal politics, he was always a gentleman.

He will be missed by his wife and four children, his nine grandchildren, and the community as a whole.
