LAND O' LAKES NewsWeb HomeSydenham Water Committeeby Wilma KennyMonday evening about 65 village residents gathered to discuss the water situation at St. Paul's Anglican Church basement in Sydenham. Local resident Allistair Lamb introduced the meeting by saying that South Frontenac Township Council's last-minute rush to proceed with a water treatment system for Sydenham, while legal, may still have been flawed. Councils decision was passed under section 221 of the RSO 1990 [revised statutes of Ontario], which evidently does not allow an appeal process. This section expired December 31, 2002, which might help explain council's haste to finalize their decision before the end of the year.
The meeting focused on how the issue of village water was being handled, and the potentially disabling cost to villagers. A small working group was formed with the intent of obtaining a legal opinion on what options, if any, were open, and how these options could be exercised. Contributions to cover expenses are being accepted by treasurer Steve Beacock at the pet store.
