We recently launched the Catch the Ace Lottery at the club in an effort to raise funds towards the Emergency Preparedness Plan that turn our club into a shelter in case of an emergency, while also providing more funds that would be used towards different community donations.
I am not someone who has never touched a deck of cards, but, I have to admit, I definitely never looked into the history of cards. And why would I do that in the first place? Cards have been, as I grew up, the simple game of crazy 8, then I learned a few games that followed suite; the last one being Euchre, which I learned at our Tuesday Euchre nights at the club 3 years ago; and which, if I may add, is still quite a challenge for me!
However, I got intrigued with the idea of catching the Ace of Spades. Why would that particular card be chosen to represent the ultimate luck and winning jackpot. And so, and I admit not my best source of information, I went to Wikipedia for some light information.
Apparently, historically, the Ace of Spades has always carried a higher value than all other cards. It's the card that bore the Royal Stamp and stamp tax for its usage was levied. It was also the card used to indicate different battalions during the World Wars. France refers to it as one of the cards of Honor. Superstition ranges from attributing to it death and luck. What a strange extreme of superstitious identification.
Well, for this person here, I will go with luck, as I wish everyone the luck. The luck to enjoy playing a game, and the luck to win too. Meanwhile, for me, I believe I have opened the Pandora Box, that will take me to reading about all other cards.
Till we meet again in a Roar, look at the daffodils that have bloomed all so beautifully, fill your houses with the aroma of gardenia, and don't forget to join us on the 19th of July, to our, always awaited, Fish Fry dinner and take out.
