Feature Article - April 26, 2007Sydenham and districtBlockParent program
by Zita R. S. Roy
During the past year, we have continued to promote the Block Parent program. Presently we have a publicity campaign to encourage more households to apply for a sign to display in a window when the householder is available. A sign in the window for just an hour a day, two or three times a week, contributes to the visibility of the program; naturally more visibility time is always preferred. This program not only helps those people requiring immediate help (by making a phone call, only), it acts as a PREVENTIVE program. We are all aware that various people will ‘cruise’ an area or district; if there are a lot of Block Parent signs visible, they just move on elsewhere.
To participate in the program, obtain an application form, which will be checked by the OPP, and your window sign will be delivered to your house. This program will cost you nothing apart from displaying the window sign when possible. By participating in the program, you are contributing to making your neighbourhood a ‘safer place’, especially for children to be able to enjoy the liberty of outdoor activities.
All the schools in the area are visited by me and the OPP to promote, instruct and encourage the correct use of the program. A message to all families of children attending these schools has recently been circulated and we are looking forward to a very positive response. Applications forms are available from most post offices, or contact me at 613-376-6402 for more information and details.
