Lady Vikings advance to OFSSA volleyball finalsBy David Brison

The North Addington Senior Girls volleyball team, led by third year player Lib Yanch, finished first at the Central Ontario Play-Downs for Class A schools at the Quinte Christian gym on Tuesday, February 27.

The lady Vikings had a rocky road to the finals in the four team play-down.In the first match against Trinity of Port Hope, they split two games, winning the first 25-18 and losing the second 21-25. In the first game, they gave up nine points on bad serves but still managed to win. Service problems continued to plague them in the second game, giving up 5 service faults and losing the game. They did however win the split - scoring more total points than Trinity.

They then played Quinte Christian, winning the first game 25-19, and losing the second 14-25 - losing the split this time.

In the third match against Clarke of Bowmansville, they again split two games, 25-17 and 18-25. Coach Ron Pethick used his bench in the second game against Clarke since he knew that the team had finished second and qualified for the finals against Quinte Christian.

The lady Vikings got it all together in the championship game against Quinte Christian winning two straight games by scores of 25-19 and 25-18. The hallmark of Ron Pethick coached teams is ball control and that was evident in the final. Lib Yanch is the only overpowering offensive player on the team. However, they play well as a unit and make few errors. They keep the ball in play, set well, and cover the court superbly. Against Quinte, Lib had eight hard and well-placed winning spikes - including the game winner in the second game when it looked as if Quinte Christian might creep back into contention.

The three third year players in the starting unit: co-captions Cori Muston and Lib Yanch, and Dee Lancaster, steady the team and provide leadership. Cori Muston, although not overpowering, sets well, gets to loose balls, and places her shots carefully. Dee Lancaster has an all-round good game. Dawn Ronfeld, a second year player, has good set up skills and plays a very intelligent game. Two first year players: Natalie Black and Amanda Knox split time - Natalie plays in the front court, and is learning to use her height effectively, and Amanda serves and plays in the back court. Amanda played very well in the final against Quinte Christian - moving very quickly to the ball. Another first year player, Danielle Andrew fills out the starting line-up. She is steady, encourages the others and even attends to off-court matters during the game, such as waking up a male spectator who had dozed off.

Coach Pethick and Assistant Coach Emily Yanch will take a 12-member team to the OFSSA finals in Chatham, Ontario on Wednesday, March 7. For the tournament he has added first year players Nikki Snider and Sarah Boomhour to the ten member roster of: Ashley Rosenblath, Natalie Black, Dawn Ronfeld, Danielle Andrew, Lib Yanch, Amanda Knox, Holly Reilly, Cynthia Shay, Dee Lancaster, and Cori Muston.
