The Relay for Life team captains' meeting was held on May 6 at the Anglican Church in Sharbot Lake. The informational meeting was well attended by the captains and was a great success.

Several topics were discussed, including the importance of this year's Relay For Life being a green event. The captains were asked to remind their team members that they need to bring their own dishes and utensils for food, as well as cups for drinking. We also ask that if you bring something into the site, you are responsible for taking it out.

The Parham fairgrounds will be open from 3:30 to 6:30PM on Friday, June 3, for the set-up of team campsites. It is very important that set-up is done at this time, as no vehicles will be allowed on the site after 6:30. As well, campsite tear-down activities will only be done after the end of the closing ceremonies on Saturday morning. Vehicles will not be able to re-enter the site until this time. Campsites are claimed on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please come early to claim the site you want for the event. If you have special accessibility requirements, please contact Leslie Merrigan at 613-375-8373, and the necessary steps will be taken.

There will be several team challenges this year, which include a team cheer, campsite decoration, costumes, team enthusiasm, a scavenger hunt and a line dance competition. If you were unable to attend the meeting, please contact Christine Teal, 613-375-6525, or Alysha Hamilton, 613-279-2074, to get your copy of the CD and line dancing instructions so your team can be prepared.

The money we raise is very important to cancer research. With this money, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) funds various cancer research projects, all geared towards understanding the disease, treatment and, we hope, one day, a cure. This year, the CCS has given $22 million dollars to 52 new research projects. Of this $22 million, $5 million is going to support research projects at Queen's University.

These projects include the work of Dr. Peter Greer, who has discovered that a protein, called Fes, plays a key role in the growth and spread of breast cancer, and, the work of Dr. Will King, who is researching the compounds that may play a role in the development of colorectal cancer.

"Funding excellent research to outsmart cancer is one important way the Canadian Cancer Society fights back against the disease," said Craig Faucette, Manager, CCS Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. "We are grateful to our generous sponsors who make research such as this possible."
