Car hits two first time triathletesby David Brison Kristin Buckley, 20, and her friend Tara White entered the beginners triathlon in Sharbot Lake on Saturday. Unfortunately, they couldnt finish the event they had trained for all summer. In the bike portion of the event they were hit by a car on Road #38 near St. Georges Lake Road.

The accident was investigated by Constable Bernie Laurin who was working that day at the Sharbot Lake OPP detachment. The investigation was not complete when we went to press Monday evening. However, Laurin was able to tell The News that the driver, a 26-year old male from the Sharbot Lake area, has been charged with careless driving.

Kristin Buckley said that she and Tara were headed north when they heard a loud squealing of car wheels on the wet road behind them. It sounded like it started from quite a distance away, Kristin said. The car, which apparently was travelling in the same direction as the two women, hit Tara first. Tara hit the front windshield and was thrown onto the road. The car apparently swerved and hit Kristen with its rear fender throwing her onto the shoulder of the road.

The Parham ambulance service was on the scene within two minutes. Tara suffered more severe abrasions and lacerations when she tumbled onto the road. Kristin reports that she is doing well but is stiff and sore and has a bruised tailbone. Both were taken by ambulance to the emergency department in Kingston and released. The driver of the vehicle was treated at the Sharbot Lake Medical Centre and released.

Kristin reports that they were disappointed that they couldnt finish the event. We plan to be back next year, she said.
