Arden News from the Kennebec Recreation Committeeby Marsden KirkMore than 60 people gathered in the Arden Community Centre on November 26th to enjoy an evening of coffee, cookies, and music in an event sponsored by the Kennebec Recreational Committee. Bruce Osborne, Russell Gendron, Loraine Shorts, Charlie Burtch, Ruth Oliver, and Doreen Black, accompanied by Jim Duthie on drums, provided a very enjoyable selection of country, western, and gospel melodies. On a somewhat variant theme, the audience was also treated to a rendition of ballroom dance tunes by the Ardencies, a group of seniors who have developed a local following. This group is made up of musicians Clint Barnett (clarinet), Bill Miles (piano), Gord McRae (guitar), and Jim Duthie (drums) with vocals by Helen Praskey. As an added bonus, Al Scott shared with the group his patented interpretation of "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille". A group of talented ladies, led by Diane Nicolson and Sheri Scott, designed and created the Recreation Committee's "Frostie the Snowman" float for entry in two local Santa Claus parades. On November 27, their efforts were rewarded when Frostie was judged the 3rd best float in the Kaladar parade. Then on Saturday Dec. 4, the float was entered in the Sharbot Lake parade.parade_fristy.jpg (10550 bytes) In other news from the Recreation Committee, the renovations to the Arden rink, started in 1998, have now been completed with the installation of new light standards and lights, both indoors and outside. Thanks are extended to a number of community minded individuals who contributed their time and efforts to this endeavour in 1999: Martin Hoogsteen, John McInstry, and Rick Brown for the wiring; and Ken Clark, Gord McRae, Bill Frazer, and Ralph Steele for clearing the weed growth in and around the rink. Now all we need is the right weather for skating. Another Recreation Committee event was held on Dec. 3. The community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony featured the children's pageant "The Fumbly Bumbly Angels", a community carol sing, the official lighting of the community Christmas tree and afterwards, a skate and sports equipment exchange. Many thanks all those involved in this special meeting.
