Awards for Doug Allison, Kelly Voteary and Brenda Martinby Jeff Green (with information provided by the Limestone School Board)

Sharbot Lake High School student Doug Allison joined Sydenham High School Student Kelly Voteary and five other high school students at the Limestone School Board Student Achiever Awards and Outstanding Service Awards in Kingston last week. Brenda Martin, who has been principal of several northern schools before retiring this year as Principal of the North Addington Education Centre/Denbigh P.S., was one of six recipients of the Outstanding Achievers Award, which were presented on the same night. Allison is currently Student Council President at SLHS, and has also distinguished himself as a musician. He plays trumpet in the High School Band and is an accomplished pianist. He also performed in the North Frontenac Little Theatre production of The King and I last month, all the while maintaining a 90% grade point average. The Student Achievement awards are presented on the recommendation of the students school, and each high school in the Limestone Board can only recommend a single student each year. In their letter in support of Doug Allison, the SLHS administration wrote Doug Allison is most deserving of special recognition. His dedication to excellence and his commitment to citizenship has gained him the respect of both staff and students at Sharbot Lake High School. He serves as a role model for us all. Kelly Voteary of Sydenham High School was the other award winner from a rural Frontenac School. Kelly is a top-ranked student and a decorated athlete, maintaining a 95% average in her OAC courses. She plays volleyball, basketball and competes in track. As well, she is a visual artist, producing paintings for the school and the Limestone Learning Foundation. Kelly Voteary is also one of 12 recipients of the Presidents

Scholarship from the University of Guelph. Valued at $20,000 over four years, it is the universitys most prized entrance scholarship.

Brenda Martin has been, and continues to be, a force in the lives of children in rural Frontenac and Lennox & Addington. The citation on her Outstanding Achiever Award concludes that Brendas energy, integrity, enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to all children in her schools is astounding and goes beyond all expectations. Brenda is also taking on a new challenge this month, acting as a community champion in helping to establish a network of Child Centres in the provincial riding of Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, Hastings.
