A special memory of Hilda Geddes

By David Brison

Sometime after I did the original story on Hilda, she stopped writing her weekly columns for the North Frontenac News, but continued writing for the Perth Courier. In early January of this year, the North Frontenac Municipal Council presented Hilda with a plaque commemorating her service to the community. I visited her with Don St. Pierre, and asked if she would resume writing her columns for the paper. She readily agreed, although she told me that cancer had again invaded her body and that she got tired very easily. She said that she would do what she could, but couldnt promise a column every week.

In the nine weeks before she went into the hospital, she submitted seven columns. They were vintage Hilda except that she wasnt doing any motoring on her own.

After she missed a report on January 24, I suggested that if she was too tired, she could give Don St. Pierre an old photo of the region and, with her help, we could piece together a story. The next week, Hilda submitted a photo of the 1933 Snow Road Softball Team along with a full story, and then also produced her usual Snow Road report! She didnt miss another column until she went into the hospital. They were all typed but she regretted that she wasnt able to use her computer which she had learned to use in her 90s!

Truly, an indomitable spirit.
