LAND O' LAKES NewsWeb Home ON SCENE holiday season safety

The festive season is upon us! A few moments of prevention will make your festive season a merry and safe one:

- If youre going to use a fresh cut tree, ensure you do not position it near heaters or wood appliances, and make sure the tree is watered daily.

- Never use lit candles on any tree, real of artificial. Candles anywhere in your home are a high-risk item. Use them with care, and never leave them unattended. The same precautions should be used with auxiliary light sources such as oil lamps.

- Electrical cords should be checked for frays, exposed wires, crimps or bends, all these conditions can cause wires to overheat and fires to start.

- The festive season means parties. Ensure that care is taken with smoking materials. A quick check around flammable materials after your guests have left, could be the difference between smoldering, smoking material starting a fire or not. Check the garbage can, or better still, take the garbage out.

- Dont leave items on your stove top turned on if you are not going to be home or you are not in the kitchen. A pot not watched can easily lead to a damaging fire.

- With increased woodstove use, please ensure your chimney and stove are kept clean. A chimney fire can put a real damper on the season or at any time.

- As always make sure your smoke detector is operational, it is a vital piece of fire safety equipment.

Crew News

In the last month some of your fire crew have attended the Ontario Fire College Legislation 101 course, which was held in Sharbot Lake.

This course exposed the participants to all aspects of legislation applicable to the fire service.

Crew from various stations participated in a presentation on spill containment, where crews are learning methods to contain certain types of spills, until specialized outside agencies respond to contain and clean up the spill.

Your Central Frontenac Emergency Fire Crews wish you and yours a safe Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
