Food Bank seeks new coordinator

The North Frontenac Food Bank is looking for new blood, and food to stock up for the Christmas season.

The Food bank has been busy this year, servicing 98 individuals and/or families in Central and North Frontenac since the beginning of the year. It has a strong committee of 16 people who keep food hampers prepared and ready to go, and two coordinators who act on requests and make sure the food is delivered promptly, once a means test on the requesting family is completed.

We would like a third co-ordinator, says Reverend Bruce Geddes of the Sharbot Lake Anglican Church, who has been involved with the Food Bank since its inception, and is also one of the co-ordinators.

We are looking for someone who is available to Sharbot Lake, open minded to the needs of those in less fortunate circumstances, and has enough weekly free time to come in and check out the requests that are there and get hampers ready for delivery. It usually requires one or two hours a week, five in the busy season, Geddes said, adding, but confidentiality is an absolute requirement. The coordinators must be able to maintain confidentiality.

The Food Bank is also hoping to attract more food as the coffers are getting low and the winter is a time of hardship for many in this area, particularly with the prospect of high hydro bills this year. Ideas for Christmas Food drives are in the works.

The North Frontenac Food Bank would also like to thank Astrid Thonigs, who has just retired as Chair of the Food Bank after many years. Brenda Piat is now the acting chair.
