Golf Tournament a Winner for PMNHCloyne In an outstanding show of community support for a good cause, over $3,200 was raised at the second annual Pine Meadow Nursing Home golf tournament held on Saturday, June 7 at Hunters Creek Golf Club. The participants came from far and wide, and well outside our County.

Sixteen foursomes and one threesome took to the greens under threatening skies, but the rains held off to make for a great day. This year, the team of Len and Trevor Tufford, Herb Clark and Ab Meeks took home top honours (and tickets to the 1000 Islands Boat Cruise) with their score of 56, but the effort was tightly contested with other entries at 57 and 59, and a smattering of low 60s. There was a reported close call on the hole-in-one for a new Ford Escort provided by A&B Ford of Perth - a miss of about 4 feet.

The longest drive and closest to the pin contests had everyone vying for bragging rights. In the end, it was Bruce McLinton and Sharon Rightmyer making the greatest distance down the fairway, while John South and Eleanor Nowell were closest to the cup. The putting competition produced a long line-up of participants at the 19th hole, and while a good number of men tried, they were still bested by June Carnrite of Perth.

A pie auction rounded out the day, after Mike and his crew at Hunters Creek (who turned over $355 to the tournaments coffers) had stuffed everyone with a delicious barbecued steak dinner, and here again, the generosity was overflowing. Peach, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry and pecan, even a lone tourtiere went on the block, with a new record set for an apple pie being bid to $40.

A barbeque, donated by Greg Harcourt and Brian Dicks through Direct Energy Business Services, brought in over $1,200 of the total raised, and Betty Andrews is now the proud owner of the new grill.

While separate messages of appreciation will be going out, the success of this tournament happens only through the support of so many businesses and individuals who contribute in various and different ways. And, of course, without the golfers, none of it would be realized. Thank you, each and every one, for again pitching in. Your generosity will help realize the completion and furnishing of the tournament committees pet project, Pine Meadow Nursing Homes picnic shelter.
