The Bedford Mining Alert AGM

The Bedford Mining Alert (BMA) will hold its 3rd annual general meeting on Saturday July 19, 2003 at 10:00 am at the Glendower Community Centre. The community Centre is located on the Westport Road about 10 Km east of the Hwy # 38 turnoff at Godfrey.

The BMA has been working hard to reform the Mining Act to ensure that there will be no negative impact from mining in Eastern Ontario. Over the years there has been a great deal of claim staking in the area from prospectors looking for graphite. Many of the claims have been on property where owners owned the surface rights but not the mineral rights. The BMA has had some success educating people about their rights under the mining act. The resulting disputes have brought some accountability to the system but there are still inequities that need to be addressed.

The environment is also a major concern of the BMA. Mining is not a benign process and in an area that boasts pristine interconnected lakes and waterways and has a growing tourism and recreational economy, the fear of water contamination and habitat destruction is real.

The general meeting is open to the public. We will highlight what we have accomplished over the year, provide strategies for individuals concerned about their properties and outline our plans for the next twelve months.

An official from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines will join us and will answer questions about MNDM policies and regulations.

With the participation of the Government of Canada
