Denbigh fishing derbyby Lisa DowlingThe second annual Denbigh Public School fishing derby was held on January 25 on Denbigh Lake. It was cold and snowing, but many people participated and all had a good time. Teachers Lisa Dowling and Janice Fuller weighed in the fish and sold chocolate bars, coffee, hot chocolate, whileDon Guiller from the Denbigh Policing Committee, barbequed hot dogs & hamburgers for the hungry fishermen.

The derby was followed by the awards ceremony in the school gymnasium at 3:30 p.m.The proud 1st place winner (with an 8 oz. fish) was 5-year-old Austin Fuller, a senior kindergarten student at the school. Denbigh_Fishing_Derby_2003He won a summer vehicle pass to all provincial parks, a rod & reel, and a sweater. Second place was won by Jesse-Lea Weichenthal with a 7 oz. fish. He took home a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart, an ice fishing rod and a hooded sweater. For third place, there was tie between Devon Rosien and Claude Crawford, each with a fish weighing 5 oz. They drew straws to determine the winner, and Claude Crawford walked away with a back pack and a golf shirt. Once the top three winners were awarded their prizes, there were over 50 draws, which gave many people prizes to take home. A special gift was presented to 8-year-old Billy Rosien for selling the most tickets, and to school volunteer Sharon Crawford for selling 22 tickets.

The school would like to thank the many local businesses and individuals who donated to the derby, and helped in so many ways.At final count, the school had made $942.50. The derby was a great success and will take place again next year.
