Possible movement over Crow Lake dockby Jeff Green

At a meeting of Central Frontenac Council on Monday night, a letter from D.G. Blanchard of the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans gave some indication of what kind of sweetener the federal government may be offering to anyone interested in taking over and repairing the dock at Crow Lake.

The dock was severely damaged by a windstorm one year ago, and concerned residents from the village of Crow Lake have been waiting ever since for repairs to be planned and implemented.

Blanchards letter said, in part, we encourage the Township of Central Frontenac to take the time and consider how the facility fits into your future plans, and whether the township would still be interested in acquiring the Crow Lake facility. Department is prepared to consider undertaking modest repairs to the Crow Lake harbour facility in conjunction with a transfer of our holdings at this facility.

The dollar value referred to by the word modest could prove to be a sticking point, but at least council and the citizens group from Crow Lake that has been pushing the issue can go ahead and design and cost the necessary repairs to the facility.

Brenda Piat, who represented the citizens group to Council, agreed to bring a costing forward to the next council meeting for discussion.

The Department of Fisheries proposed that if the municipality doesnt want the dock, the Crow Lake group might incorporate as a non-profit corporation, and the DFO would consider giving them the dock.

The matter will come back to council on April 29.
