Katherine Wheatley at The Schoolhouse

One of Canada's most luminous and literate singer-songwriters will be appearing in the intimate venue of The Schoolhouse on Saturday, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. Katherine Wheatley writes knowingly and sings passionately on topics from growing up in small-town Ontario to adult concerns of love and loss. With a disarming straightforwardness of lyric she can involve you in the social awkwardness of playing "spin the bottle," or put you on the beach at Dieppe in 1941 where so many young Canadians lost their lives.

Like her songwriting, Wheatley's singing style is unaffected, powerful, but restrained most of the time, making use of a silk-and-steel voice which is emotive, yet crystal clear a perfect vehicle for her songs. Her stage presence is also remarkable. She performed a memorable concert at Blue Skies a few years ago, red hair flying in the breeze as she sang about her hometown's debate about whether to install a new stoplight on the highway. (She's from Parry Sound, but hey, she could be from Perth!)

We're hoping Katherine will be accompanied by Wendell Ferguson, who has been recognized as Canadian Country Guitarist of the Year several times. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youth 18 and under.. To find The Schoolhouse, follow the signs in McDonalds Corners.
