SLHS triple-jumper moves on to Ontario finals in Bellevilleby David BrisonJosh Nedow has competed in about every sport basketball, soccer, volleyball, and others that is offered at Sharbot Lake High School. He has capped his busy sports career with an outstanding performance in the triple jump (hop, step, and jump) at the Ontario Eastern Regional track and field finals. Nedow finished second at the regionals in Ottawa and qualified for the Ontario finals in Belleville this Thursday. He qualified under pressure having to come through with a personal best of 12.75 metres on his last jump.

SLHS teacher Bob Seitz first saw Josh jump in a senior athletic leadership course he taught last year. We cover various track and field events and after we have finished each speciality I give each of the kids a chance to try it. I couldnt believe how far Josh went in the triple jump. I told him then that he was going to enter the triple event this year, Seitz said.

Josh worked with Seitz this year (mostly during lunch hour) on his technique and form. Josh entered four meets this year, starting at a meet at Grenville Christian in Brockville with a jump of 11.76. He has improved in each of the meets, as the competition got stiffer, and was able to improve his jump by a metre when he qualified on his last jump in Ottawa.

Josh says, I had no idea I could jump that far but my last jump at Ottawa went like clockwork. It felt so good and I knew when I landed that I had an outstanding jump. Coach Seitz says, Josh is a natural and also a super kid to coach. He loves a challenge and when you show him how he could improve, he works very hard and intelligently on it. It couldnt happen to a nicer kid.

Josh plans to go to Loyalist College next year in an advertising course. He hopes that he can continue his jumping in Loyalists track program.
