David Brison's favourites. (Nov. 14/99)I can't easily get to the corner store to get the morning newspapers. Also, I like to read more than one paper but don't want to spend $4.00 per day on papers even though, given my druthers, I would rather read a paper in print than off a website. I find the best fit between all of these conflicting needs by reading the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail every morning online. Their sites, which can be easily found, are markedly different but both user friendly. I also scan the Whig Standard -- largely for local news (which is largely non-existent). Their site is a nuisance, to put it mildly. They never have it up in the morning although they date yesterday's issue with the present day's date. It often just doesn't work, you can't get where they tell you to go and they don't correct script errors. Four others, with their sites and reasons why I like them, are:Statistics Canada (www.statcan.ca). They publish interesting statistical analyses on topics of current interest. For example, they recently reported a study of computer use by school age children across Canada. It was highest in Newfoundland and PEI. They also give you easily useable analyses of census data. I found out that the Land O'Lakes region is in the midst of a population boom! Something that lots of people just don't know -- I didn't. The former townships that comprised North Frontenac had an 11.2% increase from the 91 to 96 census. In Central Frontenac there was a 13.8% increase. This is compared to an overall increase in Ontario of 7% and in all of Canada of 6%. The increase in the former Bedford township was 20%. The former Kennebec Township had an increase of 26.5% -- probably due to the influx of seniors.Kingston Frontenac Public Library (www.kfpl.library.on.ca). An amazing site! You can search for books and topics, it is easy to do, and pinpoint where resources are in the system, whether they are in or out and when they are due. They also have an information service -- although I haven't tried it , I'll bet it is good. The New York Times (www.nytimes.com). One reason I am interested in this site is that the Times seems to be taking the lead in using the net to publish top quality photographs and photographic collections. They recently featured a wonderful photographic collection by Annie Leibovitz titled Women. I think we can certainly make better use of photos than newspapers are able to. The Clinton Mass. Community website. We are trying to incorporate many of the features of this site into our own NewsWeb. You could look at it for a preview of coming features.
