ON SCENEby Jay DeBernardi, Central Frontenac Fire & Emergency ServicesConditions are still extremely dry, so the restricted burn ban will remain in place. There have been numerous wildfires in many municipalities in our area. In our township we have had several incidents in the last few weeks. Some were man-made; others were caused by lightning strikes.

Over the Sept. 7 weekend, the MNR had crews putting out 10 fires. Please be careful; to check if burning is being allowed and under what conditions, call 279-2935, ext. 441, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It may be hard to believe, but the heating season will soon be upon us. It is recommended that heating appliances be checked for mechanical soundness and cleaned.

Wood burning or other solid combustible burning devices should be checked by a qualified individual to verify that they are in good condition and that the chimneys have been checked for proper fit and connections. Check and clean your interior and exterior pipes and replace as needed. A key to preventing chimney fires in pipes or masonry fires is to keep the creosote deposits cleaned up, not just at the beginning of the heating season, but every month to minimize risk. Chimney fires are quite capable of destroying your home and causing loss of life.

Fire Prevention Week will be October 7 11. The NFPA and Ontario Fire Marshals theme this year is Team up for Fire Safety. The approach is that we all should be working together to create a fire safe community. This is a partnership between the fire service, schools, businesses, and the community. Fire safety is everyones responsibility. If all these groups team up we will minimize dollar loss and increase life safety in our community.

Central Frontenac Fire and Emergency Services offer numerous programs year-round, not just during Fire Prevention Week. For details on programs such as Older and Wiser, Extinguisher training, smoke detectors, and inspections to name a few, call the number above.

Over the Labour Day weekend the Sharbot Lake Station held a Muscular Dystrophy drive and would like to thank the community for their support. Slightly more than $2,300 dollars was raised for this worthwhile cause, showing every little bit counts.
