OMYA to appeal ERT decisionby Jeff GreenOMYA Canada has decided to appeal a decision by an Environmental Review Tribunal (ERT) which puts limits on a permit to take water the company received in August of 2000.

The ERT ruling, which was made last month, limited OMYA to about a third of the water it had applied to take from the Tay River just west of Perth. The ERT cited the incompleteness of the environmental impact studies in its decision, leaving OMYA with three options: take the lower amount and produce less of the calcium carbonate slurry it wants to sell; seek a brand- new permit and spend the time and money trying to get that approval; or appeal the ERT decision. OMYA has decided to take the latter course. We did not receive a response to a request to OMYA for more information about the appeal at this time, but will have more on this as it unfolds.
