LOLCN and KANnet receive Connect Ontario funding
The Minister of Energy, Science & Technology, Jim Wilson, announced the first Connect Ontario funding projects at a press conference on July 11.
Three regions will receive full infrastructure funding ($1.5 million each), and 16 regions will receive business case funding ( up to $ 50 000). A Land O'Lakes Communications Network (LOLCN) and Kingston Area Network (KANnet) partnership was one of the 16 to receive the business case funding. Over the next 6 months, this partnership will develop a business plan for our region to apply for the $1.5 million full project funding.
Jim MacPherson from LOLCN and Frank Huntley of KANnet will be coordinating the development of the business plan. They will be approaching community partners to provide input and support for this plan. The Land O'Lakes Communications Network is a not-for-profit community-based organization, with partners from education, libraries, tourism, municipal government, literacy and business.
Recent projects include the establishment of 6 additional Community Access Program (CAP) sites in the region as well as work on developing a technology training centre in the region.
