Literacy to credit program stays in Sharbot Lakeby David BrisonLate in June 2001, the Limestone Board of Education informed the North Frontenac Literacy Program in Sharbot Lake that the literacy-to-credit program was going to be closed in Sharbot Lake.

This came as a surprise to The Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU), who fund the program, and to the North Frontenac Literacy Program -- who were the other partners.

Over the summer, MTCU said that the literacy program could not be closed in Sharbot Lake. Late last week, MTCU agreed to move the funding for the program from the Limestone Board to the North Frontenac Literacy Program.

Many people worked very hard over the summer months to ensure that the literacy-to-credit program was not closed. Joyce Bigelow, Executive Director of North Frontenac Literacy Program, says,

"We regret the ending of a long-time partnership, with the Limestone District School Board, in delivering adult literacy in Sharbot Lake. However, we are pleased that the funding will stay in the community and feel that we will be able to cover the service needs. We will continue to offer literacy and basic skills upgrading towards employment, further education, and independence. The funding and service requirements transferred from the Limestone School of Community Education cover literacy/numeracy towards high school credits and community interest workshops.

Over the next several months we will be networking closely with the community to ensure that the services offered for adult education are meeting the needs of our community. This will include ensuring an easy transition from literacy to credit programs and discussions regarding workshop selections. With the rolling out of mandatory literacy testing, we will also need to work closely with the Ontario Works office to ensure the best, most streamlined and sensitive services are available to OW recipients.
