Musing on our hummingbirds

Where to now? Summer is over; fertilized blossoms have withered to seed. You have fulfilled your basic purpose in our lives. To watch your flashes of iridescence; of ruby throats, of green caps. We lured you into our lives with proffers of free food. We fed you solutions of refined sugar, liberally laced with ants and dead wasps, Which cost us environmental depletion to create what you seek in nature. Aboriginal/urban legend alleges you arrived on the backs of Canada Geese. Have you departed the same? Is an imaginative fable a substitute for reality? Did we enrich your lives by providing energy beyond what nature intended? Have we done you a favour by making fast food available? For the pleasure of your beauty flashing at our window We took away your challenges and spoon-fed you trash. Now you are gone. We are left with our children.
