Flyers_Playoffs_2002Flyers beat Jets twice

Flyers playoff boundby Bill Cuthill

The Flyers finished a incredible weekend, with two victories over the Amherstview Jets. On Saturday night in Amherstview, the Flyers caught the Jets not ready for the fireworks they were about to receive; the Flyers went on to win 8-2. Scoring goals for the Flyers were: Derek Mack 3, Paul Amedeo 1, Cory Thompson 1, Mike Thompson 1, Matt Lowe 1, Matt Feeley 1. Sunday afternoon at home, the Flyers found out early they were playing the Amherstview team that they expected. Amherstview led the game 3-2, until, with 11 minutes remaining, Mike Thompson scored to tie the game. With seven minutes left, Rob Smith scored what proved to be the winner. Other scorers: Paul Amedeo 2, Derek Mack 1. Final score was 5-3 for the Flyers. There were other big winners on Sunday, with Derek Mack receiving the trophy for Most Valuable Player for December. Between the second and third period, Tim Hamilton from Ball Outdoor Sales presented Tina Howard with a 9.9 hp Johnson outboard that she had won several weeks ago for shooting the puck through a small hole in the net from center ice. This is not a easy feat, as there's approximately a quarter of inch on each side for the puck to slide through. The Flyers tried to sign Tina, but she is holding out for a better offer. The Flyers were supposed to be finished with their schedule last Sunday, but because of a snow storm, the Jan 31 game in Picton was postponed. This game will be played on Thursday Febraury 7, at Picton, and will be for first place. If the Flyers win, they will be in first place. Picton can tie Napanee, but the Raiders have won more games, so Picton would finish second. If the Flyers should lose this game, they would finish in third place. This is a big game; the Flyers need their fans to come to Picton and cheer them on. The Pirates will have a thousand fans at this game, so it will be a packed , noisy house.I wish I could tell you when the Flyers play again, but after the game in Picton next Thursday, they will have a few days off, awaiting the outcome of the mini-series between Campbellford Rebels and Amherstview Jets. The time off will be good for the Flyers, as they have numerous injuries. Matt Feeley is out with a broken collarbone; Rob Laurin with a knee injury; Ryan Selle has a back injury; and Mike Langille has cracked ribs. With Rob Laurin probably out for the season, Jamie Kirkpatrick signed Kyle King, a 16-year-old who played a excellent game for the Flyers on Sunday. Jamie also brought Pat Hannah up from the Midget team, and he too played very well, assisting on Rob Smiths winning goal. You will have to watch the Kingston Whig and listen to the radio for the playoff schedule. I will post it here, as soon as it is ready. See you at the arena!!!!
