Summer fishing by Chris Ler

With the much-celebrated small mouth and large mouth bass seasons now open, all major game fish are available to the Land O Lakes angler. While some will note that there doesnt seem to be as many fish as when they were kids, clean local lakes still provide an abundance of good fishing when compared to many other regions that have suffered the tolls of over-fishing, pollution, and acid rain.

When most people think about fishing, visions arise of the guys at a rustic fishing camp with big skillets of fish and probably a beer or two close by. Or a father and son sitting in a boat in the middle of a lake on that quest for quality time together. Either way, tales of the one that got away usually abound. But times are changing.

Cathy and Peter Davis were recently cottaging in the area when Peter remarked about that days fishing outing It was turning dusk and I wanted to come in, but I couldnt get her to stop casting! While many women still utter the stereotypical yuck! when talk about fishing, bait, and sharp hooks arise, female participation in the sport represents the fastest growing sector of the angling industry. Fly fishing represents the second fastest growing sector. They also are part of the new trend in angling: holding only the conservation fishing license, and releasing all the fish they catch after just taking a picture. The new conservation license costs less and allows for a reduced daily catch. By weeks end Peter and Cathy had netted approximately 20 fish, and Cathy had caught the most and the biggest fish including a 4-5lb walleye.

Walleye (pickerel) & northern pike launch the summer game fishing season in mid-May with much fanfare, increased boat traffic, and the beginning of derby season. Walleye, prized for their delicious meat, average about 2-3lbs, but are often caught locally weighing in excess of 8lbs. Northern pike average 4-5lbs, but dont be surprised to find a 20lb monster lurking in your lake. Lake trout usually opens in early June; liking cold water and usually found at depths of greater than 60 by summer, they average 3-5lbs, but many will top out over 10lbs.

But bass, pound for pound, are generally considered the feistiest of fighters and are probably the most sought-after game fish in the region. While small mouth bass average about a pound, and large mouth bass only slightly larger, I have seen 4lb and 6lb respectively pulled from our local lakes.

Before heading out, please be sure to pick up a copy of the local rules and regulations, available at most bait and tourist information centres. Good luck!

Basic bass shore lunch: Lightly butter, salt, and pepper bass fillets. Grill over real hardwood coals 2-3 minutes per side. Enjoy!
