Festive Parade in Sharbot Lake, Harrowsmith
Undaunted by the snow and cold weather, participants in the Santa Claus parades in Harrowsmith and Sharbot Lake marched, rode, and walked through the villages, all the while passing out candy canes and lollipops the assembled observers.
Participation levels in the parades were quite high this year, compared to other years. In fact the number of people in the parades rivalled the crowds watching them. (a report on the Harrowsmith parade can be found on page 4 in the Harrowsmith column)
The Sharbot Lake parade featured two marching bands, the Perth Community Band and the Cadet Band. There were also floats from many local individuals and businesses, horses, fire engines, and service agencies. And of course, Santa Claus brought up the rear.
Afterwards, free hot dogs and hot chocolate were available at the Oso Community Hall, courtesy of the parade sponsor, the Sharbot Lake Lions Club. Santa was also available to children at the hall, and he gave out packages of candy to each child after hearing their requests. After the last child had visited with Santa, a tired but satisfied group of Lions cleaned up the hall.
As the brooms were being passed around, Lion organiser Bernie Slavin commented, That was a pretty good parade, wasnt it?
