Editorial: on Editorialsby Jeff Green This week marks a change in the editorial policy of the Frontenac News. Up until now, we have deliberately resisted the idea of having a fixed editorial page and running weekly editorials.

We have felt that The News serves a diverse community of interests and was not the kind of paper that should take a fixed stand on issues as an institution. Our writers always have had the opportunity to write commentaries, which we have run from time to time within the paper, interspersed freely with other content, but having the paper itself hold a fixed position on things has not been our way. Furthermore, we suspect that no one actually reads editorials.

So, why the change? We have recently been accepted as prospective members of a provincial newspaper association, on the condition that we establish and maintain an editorial page. This page must include our masthead, letters to the editor, and regular editorials. We have been talking about establishing a home for our letters, so that part brings a welcome change, but writing a view from the top each week seems pretentious and unnecessary. Some people say we already have enough editorialising running through our reporting.

Still, we have decided to go ahead and run an editorial page, and will try to present considered opinions.

We welcome readers comments on this new policy.
