Sharbot Lake High School CommencementBy David Brison A total of 62 awards were handed out at the SLHS commencement Friday night. In addition to the students awards and honours, there were two awards to teachers for their contributions to education: Mark Elliott's J. C. McLeod Excellence in Teaching Award, which had been presented earlier in the year, was acknowledged by reading a citation from his fellow teachers; and the team of Mark Elliott, Michael Eveleigh, Jim MacPherson, and Tom Taylor received an award for their contribution to education through the Community Technology Development Centre (CTDC). The CTDC, under Mark Elliott's day-to-day direction, refurbish used donated computers and provide them to the schools in the area. MC Jim Dew introduced officials from the board and all levels of government. Trustee Ann Goodfellow (who is also a parent of one of the graduates) brought greetings from the trustees. She commented that it seemed like this class had started school just yesterday; and now they are embarking on further education and new careers. "Your success will not be measured in monetary terms - although it would be nice if you earned enough to support your parents," she said. She then gave them some motherly advice, "Call home once in a while and behave yourselves." Gian Kaillon, this year's valedictorian, took a somewhat unusual approach to her address. She showed slides of many of her classmates and reminisced about the special nature of her relationship to them and what they had contributed as individuals to the school. As is typical of valedictorian addresses, there were several references that eluded most of the adults and parents but were obviously shared and understood by all of the graduates. Brad Bertrim, who hasn't missed a day of school since junior kindergarten, received the Governor General's medal for the highest academic standing in his graduating class, two other awards for high achievement, and two arts awards.Commencement Governor General's medal winner Brad Bertrim -photo David Brison Student Council President Doug Allison was given nine awards for: academic achievement, contributions to the dramatic arts and music, leadership and community and school involvement.
