Remembrance Day at Sharbot Lake High School

by Sarah Magie

Last Thursday, on November 11, as veterans, Legion members and other respected citizens gathered at monuments in somber ceremony, the students of Sharbot Lake High School gathered for their own Remembrance Day ceremony. Along with a few of the community Legion members, a few select students and one of our English teachers, Mrs. Valentini, we were able to put forth a meaningful service to commemorate those brave men who died for our freedom.

The SLHS band provided a few moving melodies from the time period to start the service off, and Mr. Ward, Vice Principal, delivered some opening words. The two Masters of Ceremonies, Chava Field-Green and I (Sarah Magie) were privileged to introduce the guest speakers for the day. Brenda Garrett, representative from the Royal Canadian Legion, branch #425, delivered a powerful message about life in Europe as war was breaking out. There were also some evocative poems read by some of our intermediate students. The maturity of thought displayed by these students was impressive.

The focal point of the service, however, was the dramatic readings and the slide show that the students put together. This part of the ceremony was entitled, On the Home Front and focused on the sacrifices made by everyone back home as the men overseas fought for the freedom of our great nation.

The entire ceremony was one of prayerful thought and significance for all assembled. A very big thank you to all who helped put the service together. What a way to affect peoples views on Remembrance Day and really bring the message home about the sacrifices that were made by our distinguished veterans.
