Deputy Mayor stages private protest by Craig Bakay

Without any further explanation, South Frontenac Deputy Mayor Bill Robinson excused himself from a presentation on the Sydenham water project at Tuesdays Council meeting in Bedford District.

After the meeting, Robinson said: This was my own private protest.

Its my opinion only but Don (Coun. Smith) and I have been called aliens, and yet weve jumped through hoops on this one.

Theyve (the Sydenham Water Steering Committee) attacked the character of myself and every councillor here. Ive had enough and this is my way of getting away.

Robinson said his beef was just with the steering committee and not with the residents of Sydenham in general.

Ive spent many sleepless nights going over and over on this, he said.

Robinson insisted that, despite his protest, his opinions werent etched in stone.

Im open to solutions, he said.

Amended developmental charges bylaw passes

If youre planning to develop your property in South Frontenac and that development would increase the need for municipal services, its going to cost you more.

At its regular meeting Tuesday night in Bedford District, Council passed a developmental charges bylaw which essentially adds $2,295 per residential dwelling unit to new construction.

The charge includes $603 for county roads, bridges and equipment, $1,207 for district roads, $258 for fire protection, $115 for recreation, $57 for library services and $55 for policing.

At the insistence of Coun. Jack Barr, a section dealing with a similar charge for non-residential (commercial and industrial) properties was dropped from the bylaw because, Barr said, that aspect of the bylaw hadnt been advertised properly.

Mayor Bill Lake said the non-residential property charges are to be dealt with at a later date.

Nowhere to sit?

For the time being, South Frontenac Council will just have sit on a proposal to acquire new chairs for the Sydenham council chambers.

A proposal to spend about $3,800 to replace the current 11 chairs, which reportedly have begun to deteriorate significantly, narrowly went down to defeat, 4-3.
