GST rebate how much will municipalities save?

When the Federal government announced it was going to top up the rebate municipalities receive on the GST they pay to the Federal government, treasury departments throughout the Country scrambled to find out what this windfall will amount to for their budgets. When asked last week if she had determined how much South Frontenac will be saving, treasurer Deborah Bracken said Oh yes, it amounts to $198,000. In Central Frontenac the savings will be just over $100,000, while in North Frontenac it will be about $61,000. For the County of Frontenac the savings are $66,000. These figures are all based on previous years expenditures. They amount to how much would have been saved if the new full GST rebate were in effect. With costs always increasing, its safe to say the actual savings will be a bit higher.

As treasurers throughout the county pointed out when contacted, the savings amount to a drop in the bucket compared to all the costs incurred by municipalities, but they all felt it was a step in the right direction.
