SL Snow Drags

In previous years, organizers of the Sharbot Lake Snow Drags were nervously checking the weather forecasts at the end of January, hoping enough ice would develop on the lake so the Snow Drags could go ahead, but the cold weather of the past three weeks has put a solid coat of ice on the lake and all the elements are being put in place to make the 4th annual event the most successful ever.

There are meetings every Thursday in the month or so before the event, and last week about 15 people assembled at the Sharbot Lake Country Inn to make plans. Most of those in attendance have been involved before, and were able to laugh at past mistakes, even as they made plans to ensure they are not repeated. Gary Parks chaired the meeting, and went through a list of tasks that various people at the table and some who werent there had agreed to take on. After three years this is a group that knows it can pull an event like this off, although they are always aware the weather can throw a pretty wicked curve ball that they cant fully prepare for.

The event is a massive undertaking, with races taking place on two tracks, and in many different categories; over 150 snowmobiles in the crowded staging area or on the tracks at any given time; cars parked all along the village streets; and well over a thousand spectators in attendance. It will take 9 generators to provide the power needed for the race and for coffee and hot chocolate pots, and many volunteers for various jobs.

In particular, organizers are looking for about a half a dozen race track volunteers to ensure the races run smoothly. Interested parties should phone Gary Parks at 279-2012.

This year for the first time, there will be a $2 admission fee to the event. All money raised will be split between the Oso Recreation Committee and the Sharbot Lake Snow Riders.

Race day is Saturday February 21. Racers can register in advance or on the day.
