Sydenham Water Update

On Dec. 5, Mayor Lake and members of South Frontenac Council met with representatives of the Sydenham Safe Water Association to discuss issues around the proposed water treatment project. The following Monday, Guy LaPorte, manager of Totten, Sims, Hubicki, (the engineering firm in charge of the project) met with the new members of council to help bring them up to date on the project. Several other council and staff members were present, as well as SSWA members. Many questions were asked and answered, though Mr. La Porte did not, at times, seem as familiar with his companys report as the villagers were.

He summarized the project status by saying: tenders have not been awarded; the permit to take water is still outstanding; there has been no response to a request for additional funds; TSH has been asked to confirm that the project can be brought in under the $6.8M budget; and the School Board has agreed to increase their contribution proportional to budget increase. Mr. LaPorte said the Certificate of Approval for a water treatment plant was held up by the lack of a permit to take water. The application for this permit has been circulated by the MOE to six or so agencies, several of which have not responded. The Cataraqui Regional Conservation Authority, one of the agencies, has responded favourably, saying their concerns have been addressed, but Mr. LaPorte could not name the other agencies, and offered to obtain that information as soon as possible.

At their Dec 16 meeting in Storrington District Hall, Council will consider motions concerning the water treatment project.
