Sydenham High School Student selected for Antarctica Exploration

Students_Heads_SouthRachell Ellerbeck, a secondary student at Sydenham High School, has been selected to be one out of 100 students worldwide to participate in a voyage of exploration of Antartica.

In the paths of Sir Ernest Shackleton, Admiral Byrd and Roald Amundsen, she will journey south from the tip of South America to the heart of the Antarctic Peninsula. This is not a vacation! Aboard the ice-class expedition vessel, students will set sail on a unique quest for discovery, adventure, and knowledge, through the Students on Ice Program. Rachell will be doing research with world-renowned scientists and biologists from Dec. 15 to Dec. 30.

Rachell first learned of this wonderful opportunity through The Environmental Leadership Focus program offered at Bayridge Secondary School with teachers Mike Payne and Lisa Glithero. Ms. Glithero will also be going on this expedition as a teacher-chaperone. The Students on Ice Expeditions to Antarctica are incredible opportunities for students from around the world to explore and experience the mysteries and wonders of Antarctica that have so fascinated the world's great explorers and scientists. Students on Ice is an educational journey to the planet's frozen frontier that promises to be an unforgettable enriching and defining experience in each participant's life.

In order for Rachell to be able to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity, she'll need to raise $10,900 to cover the costs of transportation and the program. She has raised $7,000 to date, with the help of Dan Aykroyd, Leon's Furniture, and a few other individuals. Now, Rachell is asking her community to help her reach her goal. Rachell is looking forward to being an ambassador for environmental awareness, science and biology and she intends to share her experiences with other students on her return. While away, she intends to communicate with students at Loughborough Public School.
