LAND O' LAKES NewsWeb Home Northbrook Adult Learning-Kim Strickland Memorial Sponsorship Programby Janice ArthurKim_Strickland_Memorial_Sponsorship_Program Kim Strickland, a Northbrook literacy volunteer who passed away last year and who was dear to many students, has been honored by the Ontario Literacy Coalition, which has created in her name the Kim Strickland Learner Leader Sponsorship Program. Each year this program will sponsor two literacy students in Ontario to attend OLC meetings and leadership workshops in Toronto. No memorial could better honor the memory of this remarkable woman.

Kim was a role model and tutor for Northern Connections Adult Learning Program. She had overcome disabilities and addictions with a profound faith, graduated from Grade 12 as an adult, and worked enthusiastically on behalf of other adult students both as a tutor and advocate since 1999.

In 2001, while attending OLCs Courage to Learn Conference in Toronto, Kim met Patricia Brady, who brought her into OLCs Learners Council. Soon Kim became the Councils secretary, and participated in project steering committees, sharing her enthusiasm with everyone she met. She was also registered to begin literacy practitioner courses with Conestoga College her career course was set.

Kims friends, students and teachers from Northern Connections in Northbrook and Sharbot Lake, traveled to the LLEO Conference in Picton on March 18, and were delighted when Patricia Brady and Shirley Annabel from OLC announced the new leadership program. Perhaps it will help other literacy students find their voice Be strong dont give up thats what Kim would say.
